Windows updates skrewed my pc

I have turned off Automatic restart but do not get a BSOD.
Event viewer I have not checked.
I have been meaning to track logged events but didn't have time this morning.

It's a different story if I my pc had these issues before.

Librarian - I have not tested a new motherboard.
I am going through uninstalling updates first.
If it is not solved then I will format and reinstall Windows.
If after that I still have no joy then the MB will be investigated.

I agree 100%, but I am not a system admin and this is not an office computer. Anyone who uses a PC for personal usage knows that no matter how hard you try, over time your PC will most certainly become bloated. And what might take you a few minutes will probably take me days to root out.

Update:

My pc is officially dead.
Wouldn't turn on this morning at all after not even being stable in safe mode.
I can only assume it is my 3 week old Seasonic PSU.
I'll be swapping it out for me previous psu to see if it is in fact the problem.
I tried to reinstall windows last night but it crashed during setup as well.

I am a System Administrator and I update hundreds of computers ranging from XP to Windows 7 & 8 and we don't see this effect anywhere to what you describe. Check your antivirus software for an updated release. Remove the bloatware that starts with your computer. Diagnose and troubleshoot the source of the problem. Don't just uninstall and format and go bat dung crazy.

I'm not sold on Windows Updates.
I have never had an issue until this point.
Maybe it's a combination of a few things, bad timing on the updates, whatever it may be.

The point is I don't trust Windows Updates at all.

My PC runs just fine without them.
 
Windows updates are awesome. Its an absolute MUST.

I only say this because I make a living off computer and people issues :D

Windows updates are mostly okay in corporates where users have very limited access and only a small number of installed apps that never change.

It's simply gotta be something on your local box. WinUpdate works flawlessly for HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of computers. Not easy to find, perhaps. But it's in your box.
 
Applied Daz loader, downloaded 1.4GB of Win7 x64 updates (phew) and installed them. Windows still genuine, everything peachy.
Dunno if it was this or my switch from Avast! to MSE (or perhaps both) but I'm seeing major performance increases and better boot times.
 
I should have updated this earlier.
It turns out to be my motherboard that was faulty.
How do I know this?
It blew a kiss of grey smoke at me as it died.

Complete OS corruption - you need to use the restore partition and start from scratch.

Look on the Asus T100 forums, happened to many of those.

But I also had it on a Sony Duo 11. Real PITA - and it was definitely caused by Windows Updates.

For the most part this is true, but I've also had client computers where everything else is fine, but a Windows update managed to put them into a boot loop, or dropped out their sound, or messed around with the LAN drivers or confused Windows update itself. **** happens, they can't possibly test for every software and hardware combination under the sun.

Not meaning to be antagonistic here - your experience is completely different. You have a controlled environment where the users probably don't have much in the way of Admin or Power User rights to begin with and if you have solid policies, you test updates on a few clients first before rolling them out completely. Personal client computers change on an almost weekly basis and its those machines that see the majority of issues. Finding the root cause of the issue usually takes quite a while because you're not familiar with the setup or what files are on the system.

In my case, my personal rig failed to run through the Windows 8.1 installer because a lone piece of software was causing the update to crash and forced Windows to retrace its steps - turned out it was the Steelseries Engine drivers at fault and I spent weeks figuring that out.
