Windows XP Updates Fail

Perhaps this may help someone else:

I have been struggling to get numerous Windows XP workstations to update.

I read everything I could find relating to the problem, but none of the solutions worked.

Yesterday, I had to do a fresh Windows XP install & noticed that as soon as [Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows XP x86 (KB982670)] had been applied, any updates, whether automatic or manual, failed.

After removing this update on the fresh install as well as the other workstations, Windows Update is working again on all the workstations.

Interesting. What errors were you getting in the windowsupdate.log file?

KB982670 is not an auto update for XP. It is an optional one that is not needed....
"Specifically, the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is released as a recommended update that may be installed automatically on Windows Vista and Windows 7. The Client Profile is released as an optional update for Windows XP. In Windows XP, you must manually run WU and select the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile."

@gregmcc - The error code on all the workstations which wouldn't update => 0x80190193

@AcidRaZor - Windows XP will be supported by Micro$oft until 8th April 2014 (http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?ln=en-gb&c2=1173)
