Wisdom teeth removal

Yeah but its hard people don't see it that way when it comes to medicine, because med aid covers 100% tarrifs but hospitals charge 300% they see it as pointless. Must remember when you in theatre its per second billing

Got my hospital bill...R10 400 :)
still waiting for the specialist bill as well...

I had mine out in May ... 4 wisdoms in 1 go. Two of my wisdoms were quite badly impacted. One on top and one on the bottom ... the other two were fine ... one fully out, one still inside my gums.

I used Dr Moolla, a Maxillofacial Surgeon based at Donald Gordon Clinic. I opted to use Edenvale Day Clinic as it lowered my Discovery Pay-in form R3300 for in-hospital to R2200 for Day Clinic.

I arrived at the clinic at about 12, was booked for 2, so I took a walk around the area to the computer shops and stuff and came back at 1ish. My surgery was over by about 3.30 and I woke up at 4 and went home.
I was under General ... when I went into theatre, the Anaesthetist told me he was injecting Dormicum and that I would feel a slight tingle and then I would slowly go under. The last thing I remember before waking up, was saying to him that I think I feel the tingly sensation :P ... Dormicum doesn't put you under though ... but it does make you lose your short term memory as a side effect from when it's in.

I also sort of remember trying to put a shirt on over my medical coat thing when I woke up ... but the memory is fuzzy :P

I barely swelled up at all, and was already eating relatively solid stuff the next day ... think I had a steak two days later. I wasn't in pain unless I was late on my meds, then felt like a headache creeping up from my jaw ... not much after that.

Otherwise, it was no where near as scary as everyone portrayed. My older sister had a different experience though ... she swelled up big time and her face was black and blue ... looked like her surgeon was a butcher :P

Here is the tooth he extracted:

That evening, trying to whistle ... mouth still semi-parilised :p

5 Days after the op ... almost no swelling, and I was clearly active :p

The following are semi-graphic and have some blood and just look gross, don't click the link if you are squeemish:
A photo I took just after I woke up - You can see the blood in my mouth, minimal swelling and eyes still drowsy :p

I got my hospital bill ... also about R10.5k ... Surgeon and Anaesthatist were about 7k together.
Surgeon charged 100% Medical Aid Rate, anaesthetist charged 300% Medical Aid Rate.

I have the 100% discovery cover, so they covered the surgeon in full but only 100% of Anaesthetist.
However, I have GAP cover with complimed which covers the difference between 100% and 400% for R90 per month, and they paid the 200% shortfall. Except, they pay you and you pay the doctor, and so I made arrangement with the doctor to pay him the shortfall once I receive the payment.

I'm using a network option on my medical aid & they dont charge co-payments.

I was swolen for 5 days straight... had to use those icepacks almost all the time to reduce the swelling :(

I had a chip of wisdom tooth in my gum (where the one was impacted) which started protruding about a month after removal. Was very annoying, tongue would hit it when eating, and it was sore. Managed to yank it out last night and now it's smooth. Minimal blood. Was about 2x1mm.

:D

You should still see a dentist to be safe. They'll probably give you some stuff to ensure nothing gets infected.

its nothing probably some bone debri after removing the whizzies

Yeah seems like that. I had some pain but virtually none today. If it persists I'll see the dentist.

Was very satisfying getting it out. :D

I had the same issue ... small piece, of what I thought was left over tooth, protruding. It was super sharp, and every time my gum grew over it, it would slice through upon chewing. I told my surgeon and he told me to pop in quickly. He gave me some local on his chair, and took it out with some pliers.
He also told me it's not a piece of tooth, but rather a tiny piece of jaw bone which holds the teeth in, and sometimes this happens because they are so thin that they are sharp.

It happened about 2 weeks later again, and while trying to feel where it was exactly with my finger, I accidentally broke it off ... pain gone :p

Thank god bone itself has no pain receptors :p

That's probably what you had I think ... and so long as you keep your mouth disinfected, you should be fine :)

Sounds spot on. Rinsed with (diluted) Andolex C for safe measure. Wonderful stuff, much better than Listerine etc...

From 1 minute :P

Ha ha ha ha ha :D

Although to be fair ... I was posting it for the op to have some insight in the less painful stories :D

Thank Gd I wasn't a Walrus candidate :p

Lol, nice vid. Never heard of that guy but he is pretty funny.

I am petrified of having my wisdom teeth out. I've had 6 general anesthetics for other surgeries so I'm no newcomer to pain and recovery, but something about having a Maxillo fisting my bloody mouth scares the bejezuz out of me. I got an abscess when my one wisdom got infected once and was too scared to go to the dentist so I sterilised my mouth and drained it myself with a 23G hypodermic needle and syringe. Luckily it worked fine. I guess I might as well make use of my medical aid some time and see the dentist.

Awesome! Was at the dentist earlier today, and he took X-rays. Don't have any top wisdom teeth, and the bottom ones came out perfectly. Chances of them having to be removed sometime in the future are very slim.

Pity, I have a small hole in one of them that I'm having stopped on Wednesday. Already stressing for that injection. Can handle any injection but one in my mouth. :o

That's the thing the doc explained to me ... 2 of my wisdoms weren't causing issues ... but they're very hard to clean all the way at the back and often rot ...

I'm not scared of much ... but I'm kak scared of a root canal!

Dude thats retarded. How the hell is that better than going to a dentist who gives you some local to numb the area with a 30G needle (which is smaller btw :D).

Haha trust me I know it wasn't ideal. But it worked, and the abscess and pain was gone. Got some antibiotics and luckily it's been fine for the last 6 months but I'm delaing the inevitable. Yep I tried with a 29G insulin syringe first but it was too small to drain the pus. The dentist is my only stupid irrational fear so I can live with it for now.

For me there wasn't really any pain, just swelling and irritation. Then again they only had one to cut out the rest they pulled out.
So only the one they had to cut out was swelling and irritating.Overall for me it was not that bad.
