Woolies going cashless?

They can if its their policy. What they cant do is say they accept cash and refuse you if you pay in R1 coins
Is that true?
I thought retailers were obliged to accept all and any legal tender.

I noticed Starbucks also doing this bs, it will save businesses a significant amount not needing to manage cash floats and cash storage/cash in transit

To be honest, I don't like accepting cash. For commercial transactions I have never been at ease when having to do those deposits, especially at FNB where they tell you to go do it outside at the ATM.

Many people still pay in hard cash. It is what it is.

In the past year, 2023, I have experienced downtime when doing transactions. They blame the customer, not the bank nor the reason.

How many times in the last 5 years have you walked into WW (or any shop) and your card doesn't work?
They have internet problems or the card system is down its happened about 5 times last year

That's so funny because what happens when the card system is down that happens often at mine. They make you pay cash for all your shopping. Ive seen people have to pay cash thousands. Haha I love it. Disaster They will then have to close for the day.

That's only happened maybe once or twice in my life shopping with WW. It does happen sometimes on WW Online where their own card doesn't work sometimes.

So what happens when the cashless systems don't work?

This is South Africa at the end of the day, anything is possible. How many times have we seen Capitec issues lately.
What year are you living in? it's 2024... I've been cashless for well over a decade. I NEVER use cash any any store these days. Get with the times.

Yeah good luck refusing legal tender

Since when is it law to accept legal tender? The establishment has 100% right of refusal.

Straight from the South African Reserve Bank themselves;

"There is no concept such as 'a duty to accept cash'. It remains a contractual provision based on offer and acceptance whether to accept payments in cash or not. There is no sanction applicable at law."

Once or twice (never at WW though) but shops always have backup machines to sort it out.

Oh lordy, we have this Purple Face talking kark again. Card payments don't require internet access. They can be done completely offline.
