Woolies going cashless?

They've been doing the cashless thing at the coffee section at the Woolworths by me for a few months now

Oh lordy, we have this Purple Face talking kark again. Card payments don't require internet access. They can be done completely offline.
That’s only up to a certain amount, I think it’s over R500 or thereabouts the card machine needs to phone home. I think the merchant can also determine what that limit is.

They also need to phone home after a set number of under threshold swipes.

Come on guys, 56 posts in and nobody has realised that this is deceptive fake news. Zoom in on the logo. Woolworths Cafe is going cashless, not all Woolworths stores...
I've been watching the threads with great amusement waiting to see if that realization would drop.

I got 'caught' with this this week and in all honesty makes sense for that portion of the business.

Unfortunately people are posting misleading tweets where that's been intentionally removed.

Is that true?
I thought retailers were obliged to accept all and any legal tender.

I noticed Starbucks also doing this bs, it will save businesses a significant amount not needing to manage cash floats and cash storage/cash in transit

I'm pretty sure they have big corporate lawyers that have already checked the legality before going ahead with the marketing

What year are you living in? it's 2024... I've been cashless for well over a decade. I NEVER use cash any any store these days. Get with the times.

You missing out on the power of cash. Granted it doesn't matter for big businesses like woolworths.

That link posted earlier about SANParks made it clear.

It also means those who can't or won't use card or online payments will not have access to national parks.

But the parks are not obliged to accept cash, the Reserve Bank said in answer to questions from Business Insider South Africa.

"There is no concept such as 'a duty to accept cash'. It remains a contractual provision based on offer and acceptance whether to accept payments in cash or not. There is no sanction applicable at law."

Cash as legal tender means a business can not turn up its nose at your cash specifically, said the Bank.

"There is no obligation on businesses (creditors) to accept the tendered payment in the form of banknotes and coin, but the act of tendering such payment in legal tender discharges the debt if cash payments are accepted by the business (creditor)."

But at the same time, "SANParks is entitled to decide what it will accept as means of payment based on its risk and business model. This is a normal principle in commerce."

Should I delete my posts?

No, just proof check the kak you post next time, because you post a lot of it. You're just like my mom who forwards some bullsh!t FB post and asks me if I've seen the latest news, which is all fake. Put your phone down and go to bed mom. :X3:

My mom sent me a video of snow in Harrismith at Christmas last month. It's December, mom. It's summer. There is NO SNOW in summer in SA.

Don't be my mom.

Please think before you post, and read properly too... That's my PSA to you for 2024.

Apart from the few times a year the card machine doesn't work, the only people that have a problem with this is those that are trying to avoid paying taxes by keeping their revenue in cash and using it to pay for things (small business owners mainly). Once the money goes into a bank account SARS knows about it.

Cashless society = government control = WEF ultimate goal

Debit cards too? No requirement to confirm pin with bank?
Yes but only up to a certain level, the chip on modern cards store a bunch of info that the card machine can read to check whether the transaction can be conducted without first phoning home.
