World Cup will break our internet

With less than half the expected number of fans flowing into the country - hardly likely. That is why Fifa suddenly can find another 160 000 tickets to sell recently... basically the games should have been cancelled because of lack of interest from the international community and now we will be left to fit the bill... be prepaired for epic price hikes in everything...

It has nothing to do with fans, why would it? so they can update their status with twitter while at a game? :p
no the bandwidth demands are going to be for television coverage which will be the same regardless if 2 people come or 2 million come.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhah

Think about that again, if it was (not saying it is) that would mean that the amount of users not coming would INCREASE the load on the internet - as the SABC has sole coverage ? And they will be broadcasting via IPTV

They're trying to con you into taking a 3G contract instead of DSL!

Name and shame! ;)

Internet can't be broken. "Its a motherfarking ninja!"

Might be slightly slower speeds or a little bit longer pings to Europe but it can't actually be broken. Which isp told you this?
And to who ever said SABC is broacasting through IPTV who told you this? Is there an article of some sort to read?

Break the Internet - Hehehe - funny.

I once had a Phillemon (correct spelling) working with me and he broke a qube of concrete (was a water feature) no joke. In Africa it is possible.

Jokes aside, I do believe that all efforts will be concentrated at the WC obviously. All this uncapped, great prices etc. I also believe that we will see things returning to "normal" once the World Cup is over.

Then again ... ;)

All data from the stadiums is being transmitted via Telkom to the main FIFA offices at Nasrec (I think it is). They apparently have a number of routes via which they can do this. From their it is packaged and sent around the world via the same channels and will leave South Africa from the usual landing stations.

Sentech are on board to provide satellite transmission as a back up. They need to guarantee 100% up time for broadcast purposes. It will only be switched over to satellite if terrestrial goes down. Their service level agreements with FIFA are hardcore!

The media centre has a "farm" of satellite dishes covering an area of 5,000m2. The entire centre covers 75,000m2. Add to this the strengthening of the capacity of the Eutelsat satellites for broadcasting purposes.

Obviously everything is being done to ensure there is absolutely no downtime from a broadcast perspective. How this affects the man on the street remains to be seen. This is not a piss willy undertaking we are dealing with here!

Thats some rather interesting info there LancelotSA, thanks for sharing :)

Hope it all goes well

Everyone knows you can't break the internet!
Unless some fool is gonna break / steal / unplug a few hundred Cisco's, etc when his team looses!

Come guys, who can post a few "steal pics" of the sat farm, etc? :-p Would be nice to see whats deployed there!

hmm IIRC telkom will be supplying the media and whomever else with bandwith for the worldcup so am i right in assuming they (media etc) will be mostly using IS instead of seacom ? therefore mweb should be stable during this period ?

or am i totally wrong (wouldn't be the first time :D )

If I'm not mistaken IS gets their net through SEACOM... (I stand to be corrected , but that is how I understand it)

omg how will it break our internet????? think about it, how many games are going to be played at the same time? It will be streamed out but I doubt the streaming a couple of live games out will break our internet (maybe seacom). think of youtube they have been broken yet and they all about video streaming to 1000's of peeps. their line hasnt caught fire yet.
