I was told, by someone at an ISP, that we should look at alternatives to ADSL to connect to the internet, as the World cup will cause excessive strain and will "break" the internet!

Has anyone else heard this dribble before?

Meh, not going to happen.

Everyone knows you can't break the internet!

hmm IIRC telkom will be supplying the media and whomever else with bandwith for the worldcup so am i right in assuming they (media etc) will be mostly using IS instead of seacom ? therefore mweb should be stable during this period ?

or am i totally wrong (wouldn't be the first time :D )

If it's going to 'break' the internet, it won't be at the last mile. So no matter how you access the internet (ADSL, 3G etc), last mile doesn't matter. It all goes through a few major tier 2 providers.

Telkom has a dedicated system set for the WC, why on earth would that interfere with our browsing capabilities ?
If anything it will make it better, because the new lines landing is a step in the right direction..

easily taken in or tricked

Oh SNAP!

Well if it makes some of you feel better, Telkom has built a network seperate from the one we are using so i doubt it will break. Now let the speed increases begin :D

Edit: Anthro beat me to it :)

Its not exactly a separate network but its a direct fibre ring. For now its separate but will be incorporated into their public network after the game.
It still doesnt mean that there wont be slower internet during the SWC though because there needs to be international connectivity carrying signals to other countries and they have promised a VERy large dedicated pipe to fifa.
So international might be a bit slower but its not going to stop working completely.

And Telkom has bought additional capacity from Seacom for the SWC period, just in case!

With less than half the expected number of fans flowing into the country - hardly likely. That is why Fifa suddenly can find another 160 000 tickets to sell recently... basically the games should have been cancelled because of lack of interest from the international community and now we will be left to fit the bill... be prepaired for epic price hikes in everything...
