World's First Wireless USB External HDD

Nice. Wonder what the starting prices will be.

Something like that could be nice to use, but that speed ain't gr8 but much better than usb 2 or optical media.

Ease of set-up could also be a factor.

Will you have to install drivers in XP, Vista, Win 7? (I'm thinking several connections to different pc's - workshop / customers set-up). It would be gr8 if the OS already contains the driver to run this, instead of installing drivers manually every time it is set-up on a new / other pc. Maybe the driver is already on a partition somewhere on the w/less drive and auto installs when OS id's the drive?

Would it be troublesome to set-up wireless connection, as it sometimes does happen with current devices.
Can several pc's connect to it concurrently and what would happen to the speed or would the one on one function negate that possibility?. (home network)

That dismal 9 meter range sounds more like infra red technology than wireless as we know it.

What about security? Is the one on one function it or can other security methods be used (wep, wpa, wpa2, etc) or is the 9 meter operation the security?:p

I suppose the hdd must be powered from mains?

This can be a nice little gadget if the speed, working distance and security can be addressed in the feature.

.

if it's going to run on batteries it ain't going to last long, should be easy to boost that 9m range.
it will most likely cost a small fortune

This is what Apple's wireless hard drives go for.
They've been around for years already.

Apple Time Capsule 1TB Hard Drive

Time Capsule - 1 TB
Back up a lifetime's worth of memories with the Time Capsule, a wireless hard drive that works seamlessly with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. It’s also a full-featured 802.11n Wi-Fi base station with simultaneous dual-band support.

??? The 9m thing is odd. What i would do and like to have is this,

A box that can support 2 to 4hd's in any raid mode, it must have usb and e sata support, but the kicks would be a network cable point and a wireless n/g access point.

Errmm... you guys are comparing Wireless USB, to 802.11 / WiFi? They're 2 completely different standards, developed by 2 completely different groups, and have 2 completely different uses.

Apple's time capsule is based on 802.11, while this HD is based on Wireless USB.

Wireless USB is meant to remove the reliance on USB cables, and NOT to share a device wirelessly accross multiple devices. We already have WiFi for that.

While I agree 15MBps (120mbps) is not the fastest spped around, it is still faster than 802.11 a, b and g. Plus, you need to remember with 802.11 protocols, you are sharing the capacity with other users, so even with 802.11n, you won't get anything close to 300mbps. With wireless USB, you get the full capacity and speed.

The wireless USB standard also allows for much greater speeds, up to 60MBps (480mbps). That's even faster than 802.11n (current, draft 2) at 300mbps.
