A blackberry has served me well for a good few years but now is ticking me off so badly.

I am hoping to upgrade to an iPhone soon but wondering if it uses loads of data.

I used to be a big user of data but won't be anymore.

I have wifi at home so will to updates etc at home so out in the field I will use it for what's app and mail and obviously calls.

Can one turn off data usage and still receive calls? Like revert to wifi instead of cell data etc

Most data bundles that come with contracts these days should be sufficient for the average user. With the Cell C deal you get 500MB of bundled data with the new iPhone which will be fine if you have wifi at home/work. Even if you go out of bundle, on Cell C it's not a problem because of the cheap OOB rates.

*** thing is that due to impatience I will be stealing my moms upgrade and will then loose the 250mb data each month cos it will go to her sim.

i only use my wifi on my iphone 4 the call data is turned off (3g as well) i have wifi at home and limited wifi at work so it suits me perfectly.

only time i have an issue is when i'm travelling or on holiday...then i forced to turn on the data and that goes quite quick with me :(

I've got an iPhone 4s from Cell C earlier this year, since you have WiFi, you can turn off 3G and update over the WiFi. PS: Remember that the iPhone uses a micro-SIM.

I don't turn off anything on my iPhone 4s. With a Data monitor, I use around 180 mb each month. Whats App, emails, push services, etc.

I do have WiFi and I have restricted iCloud and Documents / Photo Stream to only work over WiFi, this saves a lot of data.

And no, you won't be making a mistake at all.

After 8+ years with RIM I'm also making the shift to the iPhone. I've been monitoring my iPad's data use and I'm not overly concerned about the data costs.

Why not wait for the new BB in January?

Because the new BB, like most new BB's are loaded with the same crappy OS.

A friend I know, swapped their iPhone 4s for a BB 9900 I think, the latest model. She regrets it to this day as it is slow, reboots when making calls and is full of bugs.

Also, if he has had a BB for a "good few years" chances are a new one will still give is the same issues and piss him off just as much.

Strange all the people that complain about BBs. Most of my friends have BBs and they are not having any trouble.

You tell your wife what you spend on gadgets? That's doff... :D

Go for the 5, you'll second guess yourself constantly...and upgrade to 5 in a few months in any case if you get the 4S now.

5.

This is why I wouldn't get a Blackberry in January. Basically a brand new OS, I would rather wait six months for any kinks to be worked out before committing to a contract.

agreed. I basically have the gold version on my dev device, and they defintely have some issues to work out, most notably the touch keyboard (although I think they will probably sell more physical keyboard devices with BB10)
