Would you go to war?

I think I was asked this before in my life - would I leave SA or go fight .... and I did.

Would I do it again - well, considering I am planning to live here - yes.

For the current bunch of Socialists - no.

So for defence yes, for furtherance of an ideology - no.

The problem I have to reconcile with - as do many in my position, is to understand what constitutes a defence force, what constitutes an occupying force, and what is a soldier and what is a terrorist ....

Here's the problem though, its your government and its army that will be giving you, and your fellow soldiers the training and weaponry required.... a government that can't keep electricity and water supply running (and there are quite a few other examples).

if my country & it's people were under attack from another nation - my answer remains yes

You're a lot more patriotic than I am then... I believe I have one live, I want it in other people's hands as little as possible... and when its in their hands, I want to make sure those are well trained hands.

sure, sometimes "sheer masses" are needed to overcome an attack, if i were to become cannon fodder in defending my people - so be it !

I would fight , but all depends who would command the forces ,with the track record of this government there is no way i would become cannon fodder because of their incompetence and negligence .

Lets say we got invaded by an equal strength country... lets say Zimbabwe.

You had the opportunity to
a.) Stay and fight
b.) Leave

What would you do? I'm asking based on the EFF's compulsory in-listing.

(deliberately put this in this sub-forum because I can see how this might end up).

I'd leave. I'm not fighting for a country that's being run in to the ground - I'm already doing my bit by struggling to keep it running with a fortune in tax money which gets spent on fancy cars and fire pools. I'm not prepared to die for that.

a.) Stay and fight

Born here. Family has been here since 1838. This is my country, regardless of which political party is in power.

if need be, i'd fight for my country & it's people - not necessarily for the government

Wish i could feel this is my country. Sadly i can't.

Born and bred here, never lived anywhere else but would be running before my feet hit the ground.

I've always wanted to be pilot so I would join... The opposite team! With my geographic and intimate local knowledge I would have this shindig wrapped up and back in time for dacquiries on my personal fiefdom of pondoland where all my servants would wear explosive neckbands.

For me it depends on who the enemy is, not who is currently in control of the country.

Islamic insurgents ? OK, hand me that gun.

Civil war ? Cheers, I'm on the first boat out of here.
The same goes for any other fight we stir up with Bot's/Zim/Mozam.... thats tribal wars, if they want to start shooting at each other than they can do it without me.

I's stay and fight if its something that could or already is a global threat. There is no point in running away from a problem that is just going to become bigger and eventually catch up with you wherever you move to

Save each other's SAPS sleeping beauty pix as they are about to be wiped. Off topic.

While you're at it how about a move or is this now the News, Current Affairs and hypotheticals that ain't gonna happen ever section?

OP explained his reasons for putting it here. Also, with the EFF mooting conscription, it could be argued that this is an extension of that News story and therefore does belong here.

I think the OP has missed a beat here... Stay and fight. Hell yes. Fight under the command of the SANDF, not so much... Militia would be my call. We have a history of citizen fighters here, as do many countries who have seen attacks by occupying forces... It rarely goes well for the occupiers.

Hmm, this.

Really depends who the enemy and their intentions are. If it's ISIS-minded folk, I'll gladly take up arms. Pointless tribal/regional/geopolitical BS? No thanks.

I'll fight the ****ers provided I don't have to enlist in an AIDS invested rape prone facility. Gimme a gun, show me how to shoot and point me at the enemy!

...I'll probably die within the first 10 min but I'll do so screaming like a mad man!
