pretty sure if you pm'ed me I would respond with "sorry too busy, can't help now" and would promptly be flamed on here as well with something along the lines of "admins are never available". Damned if you do, damned if you don't. We cannot win. Yet, we continue working hard every single day to improve the WUG and make it better. I'm still not sure what the point of this thread is really

Its Amazing, sorry to add into this late, im a jawugcore, we members know that members who are never on IRC, never active and never ask for help are the ones that suffer
This is a reason things happen, and as im sure PTAWUG members here can explain, there has been a major "REVAMP" of the ptawug network with different strategies being implemented and new Que rules being added to fix this, people who are on the irc chat will know and understand these problems but people who are not, and i know there are many here, dont understand the problems, i would suggest you become more informative and more active in the community and not just sit at home and leeeeeeech like 99% of you all do
I Was also a not too clued up member when i join about 6/7 months ago, now im earning my stars in jawugcore helping other members with there problems and the issues, my suggestion is be on IRC, learn, ask questions and it will be looked at i promise....

I was clearly on irc asking for help when this problem occured and i frequent irc as protz could confirm.
So your statement of "members who are never on IRC, never active and never ask for help are the ones that suffer"makes no sense.
I was aware of the ip renumbering system and needed help to complete the process... so we do get on irc.
Your statement of leeching is out of order.

Where did u suck out the figure of 99%? Do u know this for a fact? ... if so prove it...or else refrain from making wild comments.

Does a ratio of over 30% imply leeching...or the fact that my computer is kept powered on to allow other wuggers to download?
We cant all be active ... and no we do not all sit at home..we too have active lives,family etc.So get off your high horse.
We play our roles in our own ways by donating,allowing connections for other users,promoting the wug and enlisting new members.

(ZeroCool on IRC) I tend to agree with both sides here. Initially, I too experienced the WUG as a huge pain in the arse! (can I say arse here?) But I am first and foremost a geek, hence I kept at it until it started working to my liking. Now I enjoy all the benefits!
One of my major issues is that other users tend to get upset if one user has a better connection than the others - I can push my conneciton to -57db with ease, and without breaking the rules.
These days I just keep quiet and smile when someone tries to convince me that the WUG is better off when I have a poor signal - this is a duplex network, if I download fast, I also upload fast.
Off the soap box now.... or is it back on? The real problem is that this is a community network. it is not owned by anyone in particular, which means it is as good as the individuals sharing the network. I tend to agree with "if you dont like it leave". Too many people want the best service, without contributing. Yes we have jobs, and families etc... then dont expect to have the best connection.
My suggestion is that we create a task team, or teams to visit every installaiton, and do the same setup everywhere, with a target signal of -60 to -65db. This will benefit the entire network, highlight problem areas and identify potential new high sites.
My hand is up to be part of the solution!

I just read thru this thread for the first time and that is one ticked off individual.
A good friend has recently joined the ptawug and thinks it and its community is the best thing since sliced bread.
I am currently looking into it myself but need to get past the board of trustees for permission to put up an antenna.
They are not my biggest fans so hope they don’t block me.

markred, you need line of sight from the antenna to a highsite, so it can sit against a chimney or a wall, as long as it can "see" the highsite.
If people are allowed to put up TV antennas and DSTV dishes, you are allowed to put up wug kit.

That’s the thing with living in a secure complex. I need permission to put up a TV antenna or even a dish.
I don’t know what it has to do with anyone else but you still have to apply for permission to put anything up.
I wont have time this year so will have a look at it when I get back from holiday but want to submit my permission request so long.

I don't want to sound militant but forgiveness is easier than permission
I'm also in such a complex and have not had any issues - and I have 6 antennas up. I used a TV antenna for my first install and then did a neat job and focused on trying to keep the second routerboard obscured from view. It's all about respecting your neighbours.
Perhaps consider reusing the TV antenna on the roof (there is usually space) or using a normal DSTV bracket. I actually have a DSTV dish up as well..
There are also a number of motivations you can use (keywords include community, free etc) and also that a grid is easier on the eye than a big white DSTV dish. As ProtzKrog said, if other people can have a dish, you can have a grid. It's about precedent. Ask if you can get permission for a dish (they must grant it - precedent..! ) and then when granted, put up your grid.
Lastly, consider using 24dBi grids in the above scenario. They are much smaller and look much nicer (I have 4 of them - probably why I have not had complaints!). You only lose 3dB on them (worth it for the size difference).

It shouldn’t be a problem but I had a minor run in with one of the old people in the complex the other day and worried they might try and be spiteful.

I have to agree with you here...
Its a community network and free so IMHO members should not complain but just do their part to get the network running like it should...
I have also dealt with the ptaWUG guys and they are super friendly and enthusiastic about the WUG... I'm sure they will help you out as far as they can IF you ask nicely
RUN FOR THE HILLS, that was SGS (SAIX GAMING SERVERS) same mentality. "ITS FREE, SO STOP MOANING!".
Just because it is free, doesn't mean he's not allowed to complain. You're seriously going to hit a brick wall sometime soon if you go around with the mentality of "IT IS FREE!". If any admin has that mentality he/she should rather leave the WUG.
But just because it is free, he (or anyone else) has no say?
