XBMC Tips, Tricks, Troubleshooting

Why not just reinstall your existing installation? Is this streaming over wireless or a wired connection?

It's the files straight from the HDD. That's whats puzzling. It just freezes, buffers then dies. 5 minute pockets.

So happy I backup my XBMC folder every 6 hours and keep them for up to 30 days. So if something goes wrong, I usually can just re-install and very easily restore all the settings and database without a problem.

A few weeks ago I made the move to install mySQL on my server (where all the media is stored). That way, I can stop a show in the middle of playback on the TV and continue on my laptop. It can also sync settings and such if I remember correctly.

Test the HDD first. Make sure it's not the drive packing up.

Then reinstall your existing version of the OS to ensure that your addons still work. To be honest, the Gotham Beta 2 is stable and most addons install properly. Those that don't will usually work if you manually extract them to your addon folder...

Anyone have advice about resizing things?

Apologies if this is a laughable question - but watching through ATV2 on a 46", and the very top of and bottom are cut off - fine for viewing, but makes seeing what add-ons etc. are being loaded/updated etc. by XMBC itself, almost impossible to read.

Had a look through settings - and cannot seem to find any option for that? Think I'm running Gotham, with iStream(?) installed.

Any suggestions?

There should be a setting on your TV itself for overscan which should solve it...

"Zoom
Allows you to zoom in the view of the GUI."

I had to adjust this to make it look right on my TV.

There are many changes in this beta that can cause problems with your install. For example, Windows XP is not supported at all.

PLEASE READ the Beta 1 blog announcement for info on problems with these beta releases.

Additionally, the Beta3 blog post detailing changes from 2 to 3 will be published Monday, so only the brave should update until then.

I've used latest nightlies for a while now. Some instability issues, so reverted back to beta 2. All working fine now, so not going to touch my setup again until a stable release of Gotham is released. There are quite a few changes between the betas that break addons.

Luckily they use the same databases once you hit Gotham so no real trouble if you backup your userdata folder...

Wasn't much stuttering this past week. Maybe one file. I suspect was source related. Or codec. Thankful I don't have to undertake reload mission.

Check that you have hardware decoding enabled. Also play with the vertical sync settings and deinterlace settings when this happens - might be source-related...
