Xbox 360 Blu-ray rumour debunked

Dolby : A last point, which CE device does not look to be media rich, the entertainment world is converging, people don't want to be switching off their i-pod to watch a cool youtube video they just thought about...media, internet and gaming is converging hence even Microsoft integrating twitter and facebook on the 360...the PS3 did it just about better than anyone else, charge slightly more than the alternative (intended use of alternative and not competitive) product on the market and they getting insulted because they integrated features that you find on most phones these days ....like i said, my 3/4 year old N91 has a hard-drive, not SSD, not non-volatile memory....a hard drive...has audio playback, video playback, streaming and web browser...now the arcade doesn't have wireless, web-browser or hard drive, it's unexcusable for a ce device...

Just because someone buys an Aracde doesn't mean they're not tech savvy or cheap ; some people don't require anything else?

I don't require anything that the PS3 offers, as I had everthing before I got into my gaming. Some of friends are the same - and others with a PS3 don't use what's on offer. I bought it for games only - and as you said, multi'platforms often look better on the Xbox 360 anyway.

Also, the problem with converged devices is :

a) You can't upgrade one part, when needed (ie the PS3 phat had an old HDMI chip which meant it couldn't bitsteam , or the new Slimline doesn't have Wireless N for streaming HD content etc)

Can you image what the PS3 is going to be like in 5 years? The converged functions will all be extremly out of date - and it'd still have another 3 years before end of life.

b) Although it may be able to do the converged tasks, a seperate device focuses on the task is often better. (ie the Sony S360 BD drive scores higher on BR than the PS3 ; the TViX streams more codecs/containers than the PS3 etc) As I've said, it's Jack of all trades, Mater of none.

Plugging in an external HDD to stream is terrible ; it needs to be FAT32, it needs 3 x specific directories, it can't do HD formats (although touted as a HD machine) etc.

Not saying that it's true about the all Arcade buyers, but it is true about most (I believe so)...working in a media company, i'm always asked for advice on consoles by my colleagues and i've almost always suggested the PS3 (obviously finding out what they want it for, their budget and kids)....and they have all come back with very positive feedback even though they were asked to put out slightly more than they budget'd for....the price doesn't make a difference, it's the value of the offering(product)...

Ppl don't use the HDD, wireless and Blu-ray because they don't have it...if they had it, they would not only use it, but be impressed by the value. Ofcourse you don't need a hard disk to play MW2...but when map packs for online come out, then they gonna find many games that they can't join...as more wireless devices come out, they will find their console lacking...

PS3 is primarily a console and the HD console of choice in my opinion...even with convergence, the point of a console is not to upgrade (perhaps other than the hard drive size which the PS3 handles awesomely)....so the components and features might get dated, but it's been a few years and it's still on par with an mainstream CE device released.

Very few consumers are gonna buy several high-end devices and that is why the PS3 is so appealing, it has the features of most CE devices (gaming console, blu-ray player, upscaler, dvd player, TV Net tool [browser and chat support], media player and streamer, storage device,etc]....

I use a 1tb external drive, was simple to format using Swissknife to FAT32....there is no directories that i create other than upgrading from usb pen...i just select 'display all' whether i'm using my drive, a usb pen or a memory stick and media is available...

I'm sorry dude, i do hear your point, but it's not an industry approach to offer 10 different models or a core model with 10 different add-on's to give the consumer choice....even referring to my N91 that has more features than the Arcade, wasn't give the choice of multiple SKU's that offer different features...It was a strategy from Microsoft to gain market share and really did more harm to all users than any good (in my opinion) because they have to cater for the lowest denominator now...

Perhaps not 10 different SKUs - but I don't see anything wrong with offering a Core and letting users upgrade as they wish?

They offer cars at a base, then load with what you need. I think it's a similar concept.

All I'm saying is that there isn't a huge issue with offering an Aracde to play games, at an affordable price. I'm guessing MS feel the same, else they would have disconituned the SKU some time ago.

Even then dude, why only proprietary add-ons ? hard-drive , wireless adapters and soon-to-be memory storage devices are ridiculously priced, if you add them on, you might as well have bought a PS3 and an arcade...and had 2 consoles....

Back to the SKU's...

I remember when people complained a bit about the # of playstation SKU's (PS3 that is)...but the real difference was only hdd size and emotion engine...

If you really look at the 360, it gets very confusing....initial core only supported SD with component providing up to 1080i but not real HD video with HDCP as component is a analogue format....it also had wired controllers...then the arcade with no hdd which means no backward compatibility and then the Pro had no composite but optical out and a detachable drive(???) and also no HDMI in the earlier revisions....In my opinion, that's just not on...but i didn't buy their box so had my say there...you have one, so guess you'll be the guy MS will be listening to...(or will they be listening to me cos they want my purchase ????) ...

It must be a preference thing, i'd hate to keep purchasing add-ons for my console, with everything tacked on somewhere on the machine. Might as well just game excusively on PC then.
The reason i don't go the PC-exclusively route is:
I dig my couch.
Prefer all-in-one solutions, even if the tech is dated in 5 years time.
And the clincher, i much prefer the PS3 exclusives over those of the 360. I use my PS3's BR, wifi, streaming etc, but in the end what made me prefer the PS3 is quite simply the games.

Even then dude, why only proprietary add-ons ?

Ah - now you raise a good point ;)

I actually totally agree with you the proprietry add ons and I've always hated them - from the initial Xbox. They're expensive and limiting to the end user :/

I hope MS will learn from this next time (although - they haven't in the two boxes they've made) and that's one aspect I like the Sony.

What some don't know, is I used to be a Sony fanboy from PS1 right through to 2 years back when I got the Xbox 360. Despite what IAP says or thinks, I had a PS3 for 8 months and I could see the good and bad - and the marketing hype.

I had a 360 for close to 3 years before i got rid of it. Granted, it only got used for about 1 year of the 3 (basically since the PS3 launched it got moved to the back burner), but i could also see the good and bad - and the marketing hype - which is why i decided to send it packing. ;)

hehe ;)

In your eyes - what are those ... ?

The good and the bad? This is from my experience with my 360.

The good.

It plays games.
It has Forza.

The bad

No built in wi-fi.
Pay to play online.
It freezes..a lot.
No other exclusives i'm interested in that i couldnt also play on PC.
Sounds like a jet enginge.
Much prefer the PS3 as a media center.
The wired wireless headset...
My launch model had no HDMI out.

I could go on but i'm sure you get my drift.;)

I do ge your drift ;)

I think many of PS3 games are 720 resolution and not a full 1080 like people think
The 50GB BR storage (games) makes no difference to the quality or graphics of the game
Up until recently, the unit coudn't bitstream to allow a decent AV amplifier to take care of processing
The media streaming is very basic - cannot search, can't display .mkv or certain other codecs, no decent GUI
Although it has wireless, it's not enough to handle HD streaming
Sony cut down on features from the initial (backwards compatibilty, SACD etc)
Horrible little controls dating back to 1994 - which the initial lacked any rumbling support
Six-Axis - hardly any games make use of this very basic motion type control

I could go on too, but you get my drift ;)

Actually, xbox games aren't really 1080p either. The frame buffer isn't big enough. The video is upscaled, AFTER generation. So the video is often generated at sub-720p before being upscaled to whatever resolution is desired. But the PS3 titles that ARE 1080p are actually generated at 1080p, as far as I know. Usually. Granted, 1080p is 1080p, to the average user.

The PS3 actually plays quite a variety of containers and codecs INCLUDING mkv. It just doesn't have very good support for mkv. In that respect, the xbox wins, because its support for mkv has recently gotten very good.

Which firmware? I'm pretty sure we've got 3.0 and it won't do any MKV I've ripped

I think many of PS3 games are 720 resolution and not a full 1080 like people think - same for the 360. My set only displays 720p/1080i, so either way it makes no difference.;)
The 50GB BR storage (games) makes no difference to the quality or graphics of the game - true, although i have yet to see a game on the 360 that looks as good as Uncharted 2 or KZ2. ;)
Up until recently, the unit coudn't bitstream to allow a decent AV amplifier to take care of processing - true, up until recently...;)
The media streaming is very basic - cannot search, can't display .mkv or certain other codecs, no decent GUI - yet miles ahead of that of the 360;)
Although it has wireless, it's not enough to handle HD streaming
Sony cut down on features from the initial (backwards compatibilty, SACD etc) - i don't stream HD content, i use it for internet streaming, music, photos. ;).
Horrible little controls dating back to 1994 - which the initial lacked any rumbling support - that's obviously preference, since i prefer the DS3 over the 360 bulk-inator.;)
Six-Axis - hardly any games make use of this very basic motion type control

Got your drift, sure you're getting mine. ;-)
So you see, it caters perfectly to my taste, and, most importantly, has the games i want to play.

And the 360 does to mine :)

Glad we agree *shakes hand*

Poor as in not displaying half of them at all? Or poor as in you can't pause, FF, RWD, poor quality etc?
