Hint: go back 45 years and look at what happened with DOS and Windows.

Their plan is to get their stuff onto as many devices as possible. Leave everyone else to fight over the hardware while they print money. Sucks for us, not for them...

Nah PS3 was still trying to catch it's breath, I mean it was still not the console for third parties in 2009 and it needed those first parties to grab people.
Which it started to do, but not holding up to the 360 juggernaut at the time, but thanks to MS stupidity and focusing on the kinect instead of games, the PS3 took it, also by 2010 and 2011 the developers were now used to the cell architecture and could produce good looking games, though uncharted 2 was really good looking for it's time.

Sadly Linux is catching up, thanks to Steam. MS needs to start actually focusing on how to handle gaming again or start focusing on businesses, where Linux isn't in it.

Add to that, I would say the only reason Xbox exists is cause Microsoft was pushing for DirectX adoption. Hence the name ala Direct X'Box

They don't need that anymore.

Well they shouldn't have produced the 360 if that was the case. That console even with it's faults was probably iconic

I would argue that Linux is actually starting to gain more in the business space than the personal space...
 
It does seem the future of "consoles" will be third party devices running some form of Steam/Gamepass OS.

It's always held a place in servers, but not for everyday use. There's been plenty of attempts of it, but users are really just so used to Office that just changing to libreoffice or openoffice seems to pop their brains.

Which is how it should be, consoles never made the money, game sales did.

OpenGl was declining yes, but, big houses like ID Software was still using it back in 2007 and OpenGL 3 was set to be launched around that time. If the 360 did not come out dev's would have gone back so there was till a need to push.

Edit: Remember, games made with OpenGL were easy to port to PC, Mac, and PlayStation. DirectX only worked on PC and Xbox

Man just thinking back to the 360 era, 4 Gears games, GTA 4 and 5, RDR, multiple Call of Duty games with MW and MW2 being tops, Assassins Creed 1,2 (all it's off shoots),3,4 and Rogue. Halo 3,4, Reach, ODST, Batman series, Bioshock series, Mass Effect trilogy and and. No wonder we feel like we're being cheated this last two generations.

Well there's your answer then. MS sees no value in losing money on hardware. They only did it in the first place to establish a footprint in the gaming sector. Now that they have it, along with all those acquisitions, it's time to collect...
 
Quick update and first impressions of the Xbox Ally. I can't say anything different than what the reviewers said.
Will be playing over the weekend mostly.

- Bunch of windows, armory crate and firmware updates had to be done on first powerup.
- Extremely comfortable to hold.
- Initial setup is way easier than previous gen. Windows handheld mode helps a lot here.
- Had no need to enter windows desktop mode, yet.
- Battery life is excellent; it's got a big battery after all.
- Awesome sound quality, goes loud af without distortion.
- Boot is faster.

The Bad:
- The UI felt a bit glitchy at times, could be due to updates running in the background.
- I've seen temperatures of 90+ when running in 35w mode (plugged in)
- We do get free 3 months of GamePass as with previous gen, but it's still the crappy/limited one. Would have loved to have ultimate instead. Since this handheld is expensive.
- Some resource hungry AAA titles barely get 60fps, but with some tweaks and lower quality it can be achieved and higher.
- In steam big picture mode, press the Xbox button for steam options, but then the Xbox menu pops up instead. Had to do it via touchscreen.
- The usual windows quirks still appear, like UAC prompts. No big deal, it happens once per game.
- Not worth R19k, more like R16k in my opinion.

If you already have an Asus handheld or similar, upgrading to this will not give you anything extra worth talking about it.

EDIT: One convenience issue that's fixed is sleep mode. Immediately back in windows after pressing power button once and fingerprint authenticated.

They had good sales earlier this year I missed, you could get one with Diablo 4 for 9999. They've said they're still committed to consoles but to have no stock this close to the holidays is ridiculous.

The ps5 digital edition went from 10k to 12.5k,its ridiculous but looks like I'll have to buy another ps5 to replace my broken one. Only series x listings I see are close to ps5 pro money.

Edit: Young people seem to forget about PS3 generation. When PS3 dropped right after PS2 record-breaking success of 160 million units, the price of the console was a record high $600 US with almost no 1st party games. 360's competition caused Sony to drop the price and heavily invest in 1st party games.

I'm already disappointed in sonys line up, what a massive downgrade from the ps3 and early ps4 generation.
