Xbox Series X / S

So in theory it looks like you can replace your internal SSD with a bigger one if you ever wanna (Say 2 years from now and they cheap + out of warranty)

I do wonder why they opted for the "replaceable" SSD as it is cheaper to have it soldered directly into the board. Maybe it's as simple as MS will release 2TB consoles in the future and it's just a case of putting a larger SSD in.

Cost is the key here... but not what you think.

Its cheaper to use low wage humans to hand assemble off the shelve parts than it is to build an assembly plant to make build for purpose parts. What you lose is quality and standardization.

Personally I prefer the off the shelve approach. Sure your quality is based on luck of the draw... but in the long run your reparability rating goes through the roof. <-- Example just last month I replaced the 200 GB Hdd in my PS3 with an 250 GB SATA SSD cause it had issues starting up.

OK this really sucks.. big time.

Was playing Broforce on GamePass PC thinking its actually better suited for console... could not find it so went to look why not and found this:

This week it’s become apparent that the epic pixel-heavy side-scrolling shooter known as Broforce will not be released on Xbox One. According to the creators of this game at Free Lives Games, “as far as I know Microsoft has a clause in their contract where they won’t accept an indie game if it launches on Xbox after PlayStation.” This comes from Creative Director Evan Greenwood at Free Lives Games, who also confirmed this week that Sony “reached out to us with a deal we couldn’t reasonably refuse.”

Now that really sucks as its such a cool contender for co-op dual play it on console :(

The XSX/X is not an off the shelf SSD as confirmed by Western Digital a while back.

According to Western Digital, the Xbox Series X's WD SN530 SSD isn't a stock OEM drive that's limited to PCIe Gen3 x4 performance. Instead, the drive has been outfitted with a special ASIC that enables both PCIe Gen3 x4 and Gen4 x2 performance, which allows for up to 3.938 GB of max throughput. For reference, the Series X targets 2.4GB/sec in uncompressed data transfers.

The design of not having a soldered on SSD obviously has advantages for MS like cheaper repairs if SSD packs up instead of replacing an entire main board, or easy upgrades for future releases of XSX/S as no changes to main boards will be required. Of course, they could even change suppliers of the SSD down the line quite easily if they wanted/needed to without much disruption to the manufacturing process, if any.

I do prefer the ability to swap out certain hardware, I suppose we will see what the possibility of non-official storage capacity increases of the XSX/S will hold in the future because there is no way I am paying £219 for an expansion card.

Just to confirm, currently using a 10 year old hdd for external storage with the only issue being I cannot play enhanced games from it, have to transfer it to the internal storage.

Can you play enhanced games off an external SSD? if not then im sticking to my hdd for now.

Released straight onto Game Pass, Series S/X Enhanced with a rating of 9/10.

Call of the Sea is an otherworldly adventure game set in the 1930s South Pacific. Explore a lush island paradise and puzzle out the secrets of a lost civilization in the hunt for your husband’s missing expedition.

External SSD's on the older gen Xbox's will be a lot better when it comes to load times and maybe 1 or 2 features for a specific game ( Texture loading / Open world games )

As for the new gen an external SSD would simply be for storage, I think you would need to transfer the game from your external onto your new next gen's hd/SSD to play ... Well I think thats correct.

Yep, on the Series S/X you can only play normal games from the external while the enhanced stuff need to be on the internal in order to be played.

Nope, I like it a lot more than the previous one.

For me they identical... only way to tell is by extra share button and in the dark, the texture on trigger buttons.

Yep, this is the only part where SSD vs HDD makes a difference as transfer speed is a lot faster using SSD. When playing games not so much, the couple of seconds diff for screens to load is hardly noticeable.

One thing that did shock me is that quick resume works on External HDD games as well. I thought this feature was reserved for Internally installed games only. <-- pleasant bonus.

You are supposed to yes, but I have been unable to. I get an error every single time.

Filled up a 2TB, got a 4TB, tried to transfer some games to the 4TB. Error.
Tried to move some games from the external to the internal. Error.

But will investigate more before I give up.

You do know that all Microsoft help desk calls go to Ireland no mater what country you phone from.
OK, I got sorted in the end but that was by switching everything back to the UK locale. I then paid GBP1 and now have Gamepass Ultimate until March 2022 (there was an additional offer of 3 months free on sign-up).

Happy days!
