Xbox360 prices to skyrocket

Wrong there will be no price drop in the PS 3, Sony has already stated this very clearly.

Secondly I have to point out one thing in defence of Microsoft, they did not increase the prices. This price increase comes from our local distributors MI Digital.

Same with the games the local importers is adding on huge markups and that goes straight to their pockets. There is basically a monopoly in the gaming market locally (pardon the pun). Look at the Wii there is absolutely no reason for it to be so expensive locally while it is much much cheaper overseas also Nintendo's RRP is also much lower than what we are being charged.

If worst comes to worst just buy online and import your own stuff .
 
I agree companies are in it for profits (and rightly so) but there is profit and extreme profit. I must admit I have not done a cost for cost comparison and a lot of what I think is extreme profit may not be but this is my opinion. For example in September this year at a Best Buy store in LA, I could get a copy of Vista premium for $ 70. At the time it the currency was about 8:1, granted it was on special but the price difference between what one pays here for the same copy is crazy. Call me a skeptic, call me paranoid but I smell rat when I see price differences like these.

And I simply hate the fact that we, the SA public, are always on the back foot and used as a 90 degree resting post, all the while being forced to smile and say it all ok. When it is not ok....no wonder piracy is so high here. :-(

Its not really that much cheaper overseas. Dont confuse the term "overseas" with "USA". In europe they are paying 250euros for the Wii which works out to about R3280.

The USA have a sweet deal sitting on $250 for the Wii. Nintendo themselves have said that the Wii is under-priced in the USA.

The relative prices of a McDonalds BigMac in different countries is more representative of what you can buy with the currency than the official exchange rate is.

You cant really compare high end technology to hamburgers. Would be great if we could, but the margins are just so different. Microsoft are barely breaking even on the XBox360 in USA.

How can we expect them to lower the price to suite the SA socioeconomic climate?

I do however feel that the new prices are a bit overboard

Uhm... well, if no one buys new then the 2nd hand market will also die.

Gaming in SA is going to die very quickly if things don't get better. No wait, it won't die - everyone will just be playing on hacked servers with their hacked game copies.
 
So, Guitar Hero: World Tour is going to cost over 4 grand? For a GAME? Wow. Best I go out and buy everything I want to buy for the XBOX before Christmas. Hey.... waitaminute!! Isn't this just a clever marketting ploy?

The Xbox 360 Elite will now be more expensive than the PS3 40GB, and just R200 cheaper than the PS3 80Gb which includes 2 games.

This is a very bad news for me. I just spent my annual bonus on a new tile floor and I've been saving up to buy a xbox 360 pro and some games (GoW, Fable 1+2, Viva Pinata) for christmas.

Now that shiny plastic card in my wallet to call me to use it...
 
All that cash spent then you wake up to a RROD.

I'll stick with my PC.
