XCom Enemy Unknown

I have been jamming the old UFO Defense one last week again, stirs up some good memories.
Surprised how much more I struggle now as compared to when I last played it as a young laaitjie.

This generation of games has made you weak. Games are being dumbed down. Have been for a while.

I guess you might just be right.

As I mentioned in another thread. I enjoyed Assassin's Creed 1, but AC2 bored my brains out. No challenge.

The guards get you down to 1 bar of health then wait for your life to regen before attacking. Once I saw that I just stopped. No point to continue.

so far its

DeepX1
Pitbull_ZA
Phreeseed
Chevron_ZA
KosmikZA
Shayd

anyone else?

Add me to the list. I loved terror from the deep. The music made me tingle it was so eerie.

I felt the same way about Dragon Age, the first one was such an epic game, full of good things....... then around came Dragon Age 2, well that was just a terrible followup game.

Most dificult games I ever played were the Xcom serious and a adventure game called Mars Redemption. It was such a success to complete XCOM on the simpler difficulties, to do so on the God or superhuman levels must be nigh well impossible.

Ha, once I saw the combat in DA2 I said no thanks. DA1 at least kept some of the BG isometric style combat, but DA2 just threw it out the window for some over the shoulder abortion.

Word!! I don't know when the switch-over happened that made developers feel the need to make games easier/simpler, for fear of having their game labelled as - dare I say it - difficult??

That's why I think my memories of XCom are so fond. When I got to grips with everything you had to do and you were generating profits, while managing production, research, equipment on soldiers, loading out of aircraft and the turn based element of combat, I felt pretty good :)

thats just it .... when you fin a game today u feel good but no where close as good as you did in the past
and its sad to think that the younger gen of gamers wont have that full sense of accomplishment as we did
when things where really tough and you had to work for your smiles :} that being said a cheat here and there
helped to ;)

I can't tell you how many vids I have (tried to) watch of the original. There was a guy that reloaded his game every time he hired soldiers, to try make sure they were as highly rolled in specific stats as possible.... I didn't even know their stats changed....

I'm hoping developers have paid attention to the difficulty of Dark Souls and how it's been praised for it. I really do think my first playthrough is going to be an Ironman playthrough. No reloading if you make a mistake and soldiers die, or you didn't get the number of items you were hoping for etc. You either succeed, or you don't.

Thou shalt not cheat at XCOM! Although I was'nt behind re-loading saves when some damn alien lobbed a grenade and killed my 3 most experianced soldiers.

That, or those bloody blaster bombs, can wipe out your whole platoon if your positioning is too close.

:D
Good times!!!! How did you guys decide on a replay though? Unless 95% of an entire squad was wiped out, I would accept casualties, even if it was someone I had been grooming and try move on without them...

Is anyone else going straight to Ironman for a first playthrough? I'm having reservations already....

Even if all my units were wiped out, I always tried to go on and try getting the new rookies ranked up...... wasn't always a success though.
Think I'll wait before trying Ironman mode, sounds hectic.

Frikin cyberdiscs. And they always took a minumum of two GOOD shots to kill.

Worst was. when starting a terror mission and finding a Chrysallid just outside the Skyranger............... and nobody can kill the bloody thing on your 1st turn.

those where the toughest ... once that turn is over half your squad is gone!

I wouldn't do Ironman, have heard of a lot of game breaking bugs on the 2k forums. Would rather wait until everything is patched up before trying IM.
