Xiaomi Mi Box / Mi Box S [Android TV OS]

I still can't find any concrete answers as to what kind of bitrate x265 files the box can play, I've seen videos on YouTube and seen posts on reddit but no one ever mentions the bitrate, one post mentions how with the Kodi 18 alpha he is now able to play 4K files with a high bitrate but never mentioned numbers.

Edit: I found a post from 9 months ago where the person said they played a 4K 60.5Mbps file using Kodi no problem.

Edit 2: Anyone feeling adventurous want to test out this file for me:

jellyfish-140-mbps-4k-uhd-hevc-10bit.mkv

It's above the the Blu Ray spec of max 128Mbps and it includes HD audio, so if you can play that you can play pretty much anything.

Download some high bitrate files and do the test yourself?

I linked the best one to test, the 140Mbps one is above the official Blu Ray x265 spec of 128Mbps and it includes Dolby TrueHD.

If a media player can play that it can play anything you'd find in the wild.

Here it is again:

It's 525MB
Works fine on my Litbox. Looks smooth but its hard to tell whether its 100% smooth as its a flippen swimming jellyfish. Would have been easier to tell if it was a moving human...bekoz then ones eye immediately picks up the lag.

You would've immediately noticed if it was lagging, thanks for testing it out for me, they have the same SoC so what works on the Lit will work on the Mi.

Now I can confidently recommend it to people for 4K playback.

here's my experience with the mibox with regard to playing different file type.

if you set the dispay output to 4k 60hz it will play the 4k file without issues.
But if you leave your output resolution at 4k 60hz and play a lower res file like 480p it will stutter.
I assume its the box trying to upscale the 480p file to 2160p for display to the 4k tv

so yes it struggles to UPSCALE TO 4k
but playing a 4k file is perfectly fine

Hi All,

As per the list on the first page (below) these are the following places to purchase the box locally online.

Capture.PNG

I've noticed that MIA Africa is listed as the official SA distributor and is also the cheapest of all (R1,100 vs R1,700 - R2,000 on the other sites). The other difference is that the MIA version is specifically listed as an 'EU version' while some of the others are listed as 'International' or 'Global' versions.

Does anyone know why the MIA Africa/EU version is cheaper, and if it's as good as the other Global versions, or if it is missing any capabilities? For example, once Android 7.0 is released will it be possible to update this version? Does DSTV Now work and will it continue to work? (I've had bad experiences buying MyGica devices only to find you have to replace them quite soon after).

Thanks

The device is google certified, so yes, DStv now does work. I assume the only difference between the EU and international version is the wall power plug.

It's the same as the global edition. The model we get can be updated to Android TV 7 beta.

is it worth updating to Android TV 7 beta? Still too buggy? ... or better to wait for the official release later in the year?

I've read it's not worth it, I still don't know why Xiaomi hasn't released the official update

Same as what I read.. however some are saying it should be out in May this year... will wait for the official release then.

Did you receive your item that was ordered on Friday ?

Not yet, no, however it's on the way as we speak via RTT. Had to communicate with them earlier to give them access to my estate. I received an SMS on Friday when I ordered stating delivery would be today as well.

Okay thanks

I mistakenly put my work phone number instead of my cell number , so no SMS received, gave them a call , it's currently on its way today .

I ordered on Friday and received it this morning.
