Yebo 4 Less

Assuming that the info provided by "CB" is that which one sees when one has "Cell Info Display" enabled [Nokia handsets - not sure what it's called on other types of handsets], then I tend to agree that displaying the 2.xG base-station name must stay, it was also useful to get "3G & HSDPA enabled" as an indication that such a base-station exists.

I was also worried about this, but have you looked at channel 60 lately? I get some kind of info on this channel, but I do not know* what exactly, kindly check what yours gives you?

*In the past the info that was shown was at least a location we knew here in Gordon's Bay at home, but for quite some time now it only shows "Breakwater_Lane_1"

Destructions please for an iMate JasJar [HTC Universal]...

Try under Settings -> phone:

Scroll to 'more' on the bottom menu and turn on 'Broadcast Channels'

You might have to enter channel 50 for the Y4L info and try channel 60 for the Cell-ID. (We put it back just for Roelf)

Excellent thanks :), it was enabled, but I didn't have any channels setup, just received a Y4L 55% message, but no CellID so far.

Did you add it as Channel 60?

It might not be on all the towers yet. It's still being tested and not actually released yet. Also, I don't think it comes through all the time, maybe only when you actually switch between cells.

But it will be cool to get some feedback on how it works.

I've subscribed to channel 50 and 60 and rebooted my phone but nothing's coming through yet. The normal Y4L info is showing up where the cell id normally would on another phone though.

If you have Cell Info Display enabled on your own phone, temporarily try disabling Cell Info Display to see if Y4L info starts coming through via channel 50.

Just did that and rebooted the phone, still got nothing coming through and its set to GSM only too so its definitely not on 3G. Maybe the tower here's just not enabled yet.

v3g will know what affects the frequency of Y4L messages, maybe you just have to wait until the base-station is less congested and sends out a new percentage in a Y4L message...

BTW, what make & model is your phone?

Yeah maybe. Nokia N73. The other phone that I can see the Y4L messages on as the cell info is a SE W800i.

I Enabled #50 + #60 on my Motorola V360. Only got the Y4L messages showing up where the cell info normally was. Stupid me. Saw that the quickview was still set on 50. Changed that to 60. Nothing happened, even after reboot and and and, only got bombarded with the #50 info messages that shows as an incoming sms :( - disabled #50 :). Started moving about into other cells. Works fine now :D

On 2G can be many kilometers, depending on the terrain. On 3G, not so good.

If you're slightly elevated (on a hill, for example), you could see other towers.

I'm quite high up in Plattekloof and sometimes battle with 2G service. But my problem is not that I can't see a tower, I see too many! Actually all of them. And the handset can't decide on which cell to lock on.

Yeah, years ago already I tried making a call from the nature reserve up on Tygerberg. I tried for several minutes with no success. I think what may help here is to use a "bad" antenna so that you only "see" very nearby towers.

Whenever I want to use it, it says 0% 0%. Oddly enough, this happens at around 5am till 8am when it actually rises to around 50/50, so the claim to be cheaper during off-peak cannot be totally valid.

From vodacom.co.za:

With Yebo4Less, you can now get discounts of up to 99% off calls to other Vodacom numbers (on-net calls) and discounts of up to 65% off calls to other networks (off-net calls).

Additionally, you also get a guaranteed minimum discount of 50% off calls made during off-peak times, to any number!

Off-peak is from 8PM to 7AM, so you HAVE to see at least 50/50% from 5am to 7am in the morning.

What I want to know is why they want us to subscribe to it. If I were running the show, I would just make it available to everyone if the terms are that good and beneficial.

Any change in tariff-plan must be requested by the end-user. I think those 'running the show' tries to comply with the law maybe.

Just think the squealing we'll hear here if Vodacom moved people to different tariff plans without their consent.

@mods, this should probably be moved to the Y4L thread as it's OT for this thread?

It was also 0%/0% in Plumstead at around 13:30, at Constantia at around 14:00 and in Claremont. But then I suspect the system could have told you that too. There are some areas that show nothing apart from "Vodacom". I thought it was live from all towers?

Maybe get your cellphone fixed. It's obviously broken.

Actually I was under the impression that you've turned off cell broadcasts on your handset. According to your posts above you did not want to see them.

The phone will miraculously start working again when I dial the support number I suppose?;)

No it won't. It's obviously a model that does not implement CB properly. There are a number of them as explained earlier in this thread.

But all this is moot, I thought you were going to turn it off?

/edit/ Just saw that you posted you'll lose functionality if you turn off CB and we're all still waiting for your explanation exactly what functionality you'll sacrifice by turning CB off.

By turning off CB, I lose some functionality, not so?

So what are you going to lose? I notice you never replied to the question above. Why don't you just turn it off? As per your numerous posts above, you desperately DON'T want to see Y4L CB's.

Turn it off, it's your democratic right.

(*Ignoring the baiting part of your answer*)
Without wading through 15 pages - do you have a list of these phones that don't work with CB?

I don't have a list.

You said you don't want to see CB. But if I ask you why you don't turn it off, you call it baiting? It's a simple question. Why don't you want to answer it?

Why don't you turn it off if it irks you so much? Much of the 15 pages you refer to were you complaining you don't want to see it (CB).

So, it's a very simple question: If you don't want to see the CB, why don't you just turn it off?
