Sorry for re-posting, but everyone seems to be skipping past the sticky... :erm:

I'm a little lost on the specifics for 10Mbps... but the "Attainable Rate" in the ADSL stats on my router seems to suggest that I could go up to 10MB?

Or am I wrong? If so, can you tell me the reason (from the screenshot)?

If it could go up to 10Mbps, what would be the delay - is it a manual switch that must be made, or does the line sync just get entered on Telkom's system?

And lastly, if it would be possible to get 10Mbps, any suggestions on how the hell I would convince them to do it, instead of just telling me to wait?

This is Stellenbosch Exchange, by the way...

if you 4mb line it will automatic sync at highest speed, possible.

and your link is broken :)

my router says 14mbs attainable, but no way i will ever get that :P

Whoops... it just copied the link as shown, with ellipsis, instead of the full link. Fixed now.

Okay, so if the rate attainable is no help, can anyone get any clues from the other stats?

Thanks in advance!

your line stats is very good at least , but think your exchange is not upgraded yet for 10mps, and switch to adsl+2 this should make your attainable rate higher , even though wont help, but just check it out in case

The atainable speed indicated by the router is what it actually will support if and when available. The change to 10mb/s from 4mb/s is a software config that is done after the exchange equipment is upgraded and changed to Metro Ethernet to support ADSL2 (10mb/s) services.

The problem that most people do not know about is that the further from the exchange you are the less likely it is that you will be able to get the full 10mb/s connection and the connection speed will also drop if you haven't got a good copper pair servicing your house.

In most of your urban areas where there is metro ethernet equipment in the exchanges the connections vary from 7 - 10mb/s depeding on copper quality as well as the distance from the exchange. In most cases you will see a 6 - 7 mb/s connection speed which is why you will also see on all the adeverts "Up to 10mb/s" because they can not guarantee it.

And yes when your exchange area is eventually upgraded your router will sync at the maximum speed provided automatically.

you've got a great line - just wait till the mode changes from GDMT to ADSL2+ and then you can request upgrade to 10mbps

There are also other factors to consider in addition to the linestats which can have a major effect on your ADSL linespeed. These include the condition of both the above and underground cables. If any moisture gets into these cables after heavy rains it is very unlikely that you will be able to achieve a reliable 10Mbps connection. You should also monitor how many CRC, HEC, FEC errors you accumulate after the router has been connected continuously for several hours particularly in the rainy season. High error counts can also affect the maximum attainable linespeed.

So my line went out at 2am this morning. I'm not sure if that's when things changed (would be a bit strange if it was) but when I checked the router, I saw that I am now on ADSL2+. Here's the new stats:

Seems like it's not so good as before (IIRC about SNR and attenuation) but I guess that is to be expected. More errors too - though I haven't restarted since the outage. Does it still have 10Mbps potential?

And if so, now that I have ADSL2+, what do you think is still holding them back from switching over? I wish I could ask them this, but well, you know how their call centre is...

probably cause telkoms clueless that g.dmt can do more than 4 meg :P or maybe their software wasnt updated with g.dmt and too lazy to update it so are using adsl 2+ instead

cant think of any other reason besides laziness

Shameless bump:
