Well I was having a lot of fun playing GoW this afternoon and suddenly after only lasting three weeks my Xbox decided that it had enough and gave me the RRoD :( I nearly fainted in my seat. Now I have to go and search for stock at the Telkom stores  Hopefully this time they'll give me a 2008 model.

my wife got my elite from CNA...these RROD stories are givin me the willies! anyone know if the elite is any better protected from RRODs than the other models??

The Telkom ones are refurbished units, not new. Weird, as they have the better cooling system :D

The Elites currently in stores are the 2008 batch. They should last a long while imaginary_friend.

the newer the model the less chance of it happening ...... most important thing is to keep the whole unit properly ventilated. Some peeps stick the console and the power brick in a wall unit and then wonder why it RRoD's.

ty guys. I got my xbox and ps3 on the top shelf on the divider...very very well ventilated. But i had to seperate them though; last night I heard em plottin to torture kill my wii!! poor thing was shaking! lol

Two things to check:
  • Look at the sticker on the box it came in, if the Lot No. is above 0734 then you have probably one with a Falcon chip.
  • Since the Falcon chip runs cooler, the power rating on the power brick would be 175W, as opposed to 200W on the older models.
If this is the case, then you're safe from RRoD.

Lot nr 0830, its manufacture date is 2006, its a Telkom one, refurbed, extra cooling, you telling me they upgraded the CHIP to a falcon?

where did this refurbished crap come from anyway? You're paying a small fortune in the end and nowhere does it state that you're paying for a refurb model, so wtf? Seriously.

Well, I've ... erm ... flashed a few ... and allot of them come with Hitachi DVD-ROM drives. Those were shipped with the launch (2005) models.

Some of them even have a MFR date of 2005. So my guess is they're refurbished lot brought in from the UK by MI Digital. They do have the new heatsinks as found in Arcade's and newer consoles.

Not sure of the motherboard version ...

surely there's some sort of legal thing involved if they are selling refurbs as 'new' units?

Nope. They get the units, refurbished and new free from the UK.

Then send it into retail channel or when they charge "handling" fees at swap out time.

My Premium that I bought last year is a refurbished unit, but I paid full price for it.

MI Digital, does what they want ... because they can.

Microsoft SA isn't involved in 360 support at all!

mutha-fsckers  I'm gonna look at the legal angle on that sh*t though .....

LOL

Its fine Mephisto ... don't blow a gasket :D

I'm making a living by offering real support for the Xbox 360 community!

MI Digital is pulling the wool over the eyes of the SA consumer ... sad but true :(

so hurry the hell up and get your website up and running so more peeps (including myself) can get to knowing exactly what you're doing/offering bru :D

I will be having a meeting with a web developer tomorrow. I have no idea how fast he and is associate works.

Mean time, word-of-mouth advertising and Gumtree ads are keeping me busy.

I have an associate in Boksburg, that does repairs part time. He'll be looking at getting hardware for re-programming the DVD drive and faulty 360 hard drives.

In terms of what I do (summary):

RROD repairs
No video/audio
Dashboard freezes
E74
Laser replacements
Drive replacements (only swop still working drives with a new one ... importing a programmer for dead ones)
Accessories (Original 2nd hand ones-busy getting overseas suppliers for 3rd party stuff)
Rebuilt consoles (need cheap broken ones for that ... only sold 2 so far)
New consoles (need more capital)
Firmware modification (for the cheap skates)

And I'm one guy doing this all. Very busy :D

hmm, thats quite a list bru. Only thing I don't get is the last one (firmware modification) but I'll google it. What are your prices like when it comes to dealing with peeps in other provinces?

Flashing in other words ...

My prices are standard. I charge R100 for Speed Service shipping (insured). Door to door is R200.

Xbox's are heavy!

My price-list is competitive, as there aren't 2 many honest businesses doing repairs.

Some guys get away with R50 overnight if they just parcel up the console. I have all the accessories in my workshop in the back-yard :D
