"**** ***, you bloody ******"

I have heard more of my african friends call the tsotsi's by the Kaff and Nigg3r words... Many of my african friends greet each other using 'yo ******' phrase... yes, they even call me one.

a new term of endearment ? Is it only racist when someone from another race group uses the words?

Double standards imho.

I have never heard of any South African Blacks calling each other "k". There is no such culture here like the use of "n" word by Blacks in USA and from other countries who have adopted that. So, in the context of South Africa, its racist for a white person to use the "k" word against a Black person as it has been historically.

But it is not deemed racist for a black to call a white certain names is it?. Just go to show what some people believe by definition. No wonder they are in themselves racist unknowingly or to much of a coward to admit so. The falacy exists that a black man cannot be racist.

Please provide a list of such names. I have not come across any names black people call white people besides for the occasional "Boss".

By the way, nobody is suggesting that only one particular group is racist while others cannot be. The fallacy exists only in your head.

Whitey. Mlungo. Maboer. Lekhoa.
These but a few names I have heard bl.. ahemm wtf? African people call Europeans all kinds of names. The Europeans just don't care because they have a healthy self esteem as a race. Therefore you won't hear any hoo haa about it. Unless the shrewd European can see a way to use this to his own ends. The Europeans are mature and thus will not get involved into some publuc childish bickering over what words you use to adress them by.

This does not make the African people inferiour in any way. It just proves that they have an esteem problem and instead of getting over it or seeing a therapist they now want to join groups anbout it that make laws to prevent proper expression. It's so childish.

If you take this to extreme and every race starts complaining about what you call them like the Africans do then how will we establish any form of communication. The list in history was endless.

After the K word was out in the old SA in consideration for their point of view the B word Bantu was established. Then suddenly Bantu became a swear word and to play it safe they then spoke about the plural population and plural development. That didn't go down well on a one to one basiis either. Imagine....hey plural what's your name?

Unless you really can figure out their ethnic group and call them by that.....for as long as it lasts we can give it shot. Hey mSutho AmaZulu Mashangaan. etc

The best thing I found is to just use the straight formal Sir or Mam. But in the second I cannot talk about sirs or mams. I can imagine that becomming a swear word soon if we all use it. It is like they wish to become the invisible nameless race

Whitey boer etc

Didn't realise "Whitey" was derogatory. And as for "Boer", I've hear many Afrikaans people refer to themselves as that.

Everything is derogatory if it is said in a derogatory way - even if I called you my aunties brothers cousins teaspoon. And many black people refer to whiteys as 'boere' in a derogatory way. Of course people will use whatever they deem higher impact when trying to convey the hate they have for another human - and it's all relative.
As for 'boer', I witnessed many a gun slinging and broken bottleneck fight in the dark side of town when growing up where the afrikaaner neighbours were calling the black neighbours 'houtkoppe' and the retaliation was to call the afrikaaners '*** boere'. Now being a farmer isn't such a bad thing in my books, but the hatred that went with that term was the crime, as was the hatred that went with the 'houtkoppe' comment.

When will people learn that racism isn't the issue, it's hatred. Call a flipping spade a spade and stop using labels to prioritise different kinds of the same thing.

Why is hatred OK until it's racism? It's simple, it has to do with our history as a nation - there are tender spots. And the problem is that we are developing a new tender spot by imagining that racism is the main issue in life. Xenophobia is another lovely word we throw around. It's a global society people - no-one has carte blanche on hatred - being hated or hating, no matter what the past. By making racism an issue, we allow other hate to go unnoticed.

It all hurts people, whether you neglect your ageing grandmother, abuse your children or spouse (physically or emotionally), etc. etc. One is not worse than the other.

Yeah its all about the self image! A while ago I used a simple word "Zombie" on this forum as a joke in the Springbok renaming thread and it became a sudden euphemism for Blacks. LOL

I will fear to use the word "Coconut" on this forum (An edible hard brown shelled fruit with white fleshy pulp and some healthy oily liquid inside)

Hell you really must live in a closed screened and comfy protected lifestyle!

Here some words I heard about with some I experienced first hand. Some was related to me in discussions with black workers and/or friends.

Its not the meaning or what you make of it it is the way or when it is used that matters. The intension of the word used as for directing a insult. That renders the word derogatory but does not automatically make you a racist. But of course in this Zoo if you are Afrikaans or white then that would be a different issue even if you use the politically correct word Black, but then I do not know what to use when they are yellow, tan, Reddish, super-white or any other colour for that matter.

Aibu
Whitey
Bl@@Dy Musungo
Bl@@Dy Mlungu
Maggot(s)
Milkys
mouse
Dutchman
Boerjie
igwebu
amagwebu
lekwerekwere

Rock Spider

There is another to do with smell but cannot remember the word! Maybe you or someone know first hand.

BTW I have heard a black man (gardener) refer to others in the township as "k...s". He was annoyed at what they did.

I don't find any of the above terms derogatory at all regardless of the tone with which they may be used but I am of scottish decent and someone once said to me that the scots are considered the kaffirs of europe. I found that comment most hurtful, insulting and disrespectfull. He's was lucky all I broke was his nose...

Well thats the whole point is it not. The same applies with the "k.." word apart from the fact that it's meaning was "redefined" by the way it was used.

So bl@@dy Scotsman is OK so what about coloured, that also refers to skin color and is deemed a racist word but Black is politically OK and correct.

I think the point is the word ****** for black South Africans represents 40 years of oppression, the same way that Nazis represent the holocaust for jews or hutus represent genocide for Tutsis. The use of the word is racist in the extreme and is quite rightly outlawed.

By the same token "kill the boer" or "1 boer 1 bullet" type slogans are considered hate speech and are outlawed too.

The utterances of both are not tolerated and justifiably so, they strike a nerve in all of us which pushes the boundaries of tolerance and social acceptability

Disconnect

NoADSLyet, Eugene66, Bradbowlllama, Your disconnect with the black population of South Africa is showing through.

Whitey is not derogatory just as black or darkie is not.

Mlungu is actually in this pervese black South African society complimentory.

Lekgoa is descriptive as well as complimentary. It is tswana and in full should be "Ba go kgwewa ke lewatle" it describes whites as those who came from the sea, alluding to the first encounter with whites. Just as Mlungu it is a term used in rural areas and townships and unfortunately by most blacks to denote someone of superiority. It is far from being derogatory.

Kasi is township slang for the locations.

Your arguements are flawed as they are based erroneous beliefs.

However, I think some of you guys (except isuacner; he beliefs his racist logic) are deliberately misinterpreting the definitions to suit your own agenda, which tries to dictate that the act of the white woman calling a black young man ****** is not racist, as there are other words which also denote race but are not derogatory and furthermore black people are too sensitive!!!!!! Taking the issue in terms of South Africa given its history and the fact that those particular words are not derogatory makes your arguements at best ludicrous and comical.

Calling someone a ****** is derogatory, demeaning and harmful. The pain inflicted is intentional and aims to be that and only that. Why? because by calling this young man a ****** she goes beyond her irritation with his particular act to encompass broader irritation with those of his skin colour. And most importantly, by calling him by that name, she is trying to emphasise the aparthied belief that by virtue of his skin colour he has certain inherent disagreable or unsavoury behaviour and characteristics and is thus inferior.

We must all be sensitive to the harmful effects of racist behavior and refrain from acting in ways that are demeaning and offensive to others. We can express our opinions and voice even strong disagreements without degenerating to racially charged statements. Those who defend the actions of these woman are perpetuating irresponsibility, racial divide and are themselves endorsing racism.

We all hav that nerve, just because something doesn't anger one person, doesn't mean it's OK to use, we have to think about others on this planet. However, learning to overlook other's prejudice goes a long way to making us better people. I say why let other's hatred spoil your day.

Agreed but let's not defend in the indefensible, in this case a white women coming down an escalator blocked by a black man at the bottom of the escalator which resulted in her verbally abusing him using the most despicable and derogatory racial slur she could think of...

By the same token Zuma or any other black person will not gain sympathy or a defence on this forum should they be accused of verbally abusing and/or making derogatory racial cooments against the white populous of our nation.

There is simply no need for it in the new dispensation and I think to be politically correct may be a bit of a cop out but in order to heal that's what required from all parties...

Its showing indeed. Nothing new from these forums.

Congratulations on grandmaster.

Schandenfreude explains why most forum members prefer to call this woman a racist based on 1 action alone. People call for mutual respect but define a person based on 1 evaluation. If we were all judged on our worst moment, when we are assaulted, afraid and hurt (as when the man bumped in to a woman) then the new RSA dream is looking very distant to me.

I think you are all hypocrites and should be ashamed of yourselves. Even more so if you are so arrogant as to not understand that this woman is not a racist because of this 1 action.

How many racist acts do you need to perform to be labeled a racist?
