Your vote is not a secret

Well at the system today i can hardly see how they would figure it out.

They simply gave me the next pair of ballot papers from their issued stack.

It wasn't written down or linked to my name in any way.

There wasn't a record of which order anybody entered in.

Lady at the door simply looked at my ID and said I can continue to the line forward. Someone looked at it again and scratched my name out on the voters roll.
Carried on to the next person to have my ID stamped. Then next person for the indelible ink followed lastly by the person giving me papers, but I never saw anyone writing any info to match my ID or me to the paper I was issued.
 
Agreed MrG - I think the serial numbers are there to avoid too many ballot papers and to track irregularities (I think they have been using them in the ballots on the road / illegal voting cases) - they would have to be watching very carefully to work out which ballot you voted on :)

Though on that thought I'm sure a lot of people want to know who Mbeki and Tutu voted for...
 
thats a load of Rubbish

there was no linking in any way the ballot paper to my ID, we all jumbed up in the Q.

The most they can do is know that ballot papers 1234XXX is from station y if even that.
 
Nope it's wrong, I got my little ticket stub from the machine and because I'm voting in my registered region went directly to the inker while some of the other people had to stand in a cue where they fill out some kind of form, now I voted BEFORE some of the people in front of me that filled out that form, there is NO way they could track me using that ticket stub machine.

Next when she gave me my ballots she just threw my ticket stub in a pile with NO logical order, there is no way they can know what my serial number was.
 
Nope no way it is traceable.

I tell people if they ask me who I voted for and I expect them to do the same, though often they don't.
One should be proud of who you voted for.

Agreed, though I dunno about proud... Certainly not embarrassed though...
 
I also do not fully understand (although do respect the right of) people keeping who they vote for a secret.

If you voting for a party then you should feel publicly confident in your choice and for what they stand.

BTW - just posted this cos it came from a local news paper. It's not my opinion. It does, however, make you wonder about the message they are trying to send out to the uneducated masses who may be nervously considering voting opposition. How many other voting locations had their booths the wrong way around? We were all voting with the queue facing our backs this time around in at least 3 locations this side - opposite of last time. There was also a story on the local radio about someone who reported that officials were telling pensioners that if they voted opposition, their pensions would be stopped.

How dumb is the premise of this thread? Did the person that wrote that rubbish even vote? Doesn't look like he knows how it works.

Yes the ballot is traceable... as in, this ballot was printed here then distributed to this polling station and it can be counted because its serial number isn't flagged. Not as in Pietie voted DA at 08:00. Besides, what good would that information do you? How would they transfer all that data from the (computerless) poling station to some central DB? Who cares who knows anyway. Conspiracy theories are so damn dumb.
 
And even if someone knew who I voted for I really couldn't be bothered.
