ZTE HSPA+ network workers detained

I have to agree. There are many unemployed people in South Africa. Why not just employ South African's. The problem is they want cheap labour.

exactly, have a friend working for them. since 2008 to do telecoms is a crappy industry to get into if u just graduated with bsc/msc

One hundred bucks says that it was VC or MTN that reported them because goodness knows that our home affairs department is not that proactive!!!

You can't simply just go and use unskilled labour to roll out a 3.75G network. It does not work like that. These Chinese folk know what they are doing because they work for the company designing the equipment and given the tight time lines I am willing to bet that they were the only feasible option to get the job done.

All labour unions will ALWAYS try to justify their existence (which is really pointless) by saying that unskilled labourers can replace these (probably highly skilled) Chinese workers.

Oh well CELL C still ROCK and are the reason I can now affordably download at ridiculously fast speeds!

Fixed :)

Although I would hope that they start some mentor ship program to teach people and get them familiar with the technology so we don't have to rely on outside help all the time..

Looks like gross incompetence by Home Affairs - AGAIN. They should just shut that Department down, fire everyone (incl the Minister) and start with a new one.

Do any of you really think that highly skilled telecommunications workers are standing on street corners here ?

Oh, and the unions should be shut down as well.

You don't use B SCs to set up towers - you need skilled skilled technicians which are rare in SA.

yes 100% correct, look at Telkom with their stupid local staff.

Please, do explain why. From what I hear there's a huge demand (since the first thing people buy after a lodging and food is a mobile phone).

Exactly.

Also: Nice try, Vodacom.

Talk to a friend the other day. Cell C is using zte equipment.
So to install it fast they got a cheap tender from ZTE.
Zte tried to use locals, but too [slow, expensive ] so the Chinese were flown in. Their work quality is bad [zte]. Lots of contractors were let down by Cell C , so , I blame Cell c for this illegal setup.

the issue actually has nothing to do with skilled labour. ZTE flew people in to the country in what appears quite high numbers. Its not a situation where a Siemanns or Erikson-Nokia technician comes out because of a specific technology. Instead they are paying low wages plus airfare.

ZTE has probably colluded with somebody in Home Affairs or didn't bother because they don't give a crap about SA's laws and believe they will bribe their way out.

Hopefully (but unlikely) CellC is able to rescind the contract following some or another breach by ZTE while keeping the proceeds of work. Then put the money committed to the contract to finishing the job in a better way - after all ZTE has almost given them a finished product to run with.

Agreed. Smells like corporate espionage.

Also btw Cell C not to blame for sub-contrator's employment plan/policy. Anyone who thinks otherwise is retarded. Yes you heard me retarded.

This doesn't look good for Cell C.
They are trying to rebrand their image and this is not working out too well so far.

They have an awesome product going, just wish they would clear out all these issues.

I would actually prefer that they bring in skilled Chinese workers to set up the network properly, rather than having to train locals, simply because our education system is failing. The quality workers that SA have produced are already being trained or already working. The ones that are left likely didn't receive proper proper high school education which would be the basis of any further training that ZTE would have to provide, which would explain why things go slower with local staff.

To put it more simply: I would like the network I'm using to be set up properly the first time and not have to complain about poor connectivity to a call centre and then wait weeks or months for anyone to fix it, if they ever get around to it.
