ZTE HSPA+ network workers detained

it could become their problem though both from a public relations point of view and if they do nothing after being made aware that their subcontractor is breaking the law. What is worrying is the possibility that various ZTE connections may end up putting CellC's back to the wall on this.

I bloody doubt this will affect Cell C. By and large people are cost and value conscious and Cell C is delivering what they want. Do you as a cellphone user give a damn that foreign workers built the network?

Remember you are using a foreign built handset, probably driving a (mostly)foreign made car and using a foreign made PC to read this.

The majority of these ZTE workers are qualified technicians and graduates prepared to work for a pittance and accommodation. What ZTE dis wrong was not to pay off a few senior cadres to see this through. Yes VC and MTN have reported them

ZTE spokesperson Chris Fuentes said it was a ZTE, and not a Cell C matter. The company had applied to home affairs a while ago to have work permits extended for its Chinese workers.

"It seems our applications were delayed... there is a major problem with the department... after the World Cup, home affairs was on strike," Fuentes said.

Have you seen their visa system? Its an Excel spreadsheet in Pretoria!

An IOD claim by a ZTE employee with an expired visa (or no work visa) would have been interesting in terms of SA Law.

Section 8(4) of the National Occupational Health and Safety Bill

For the purposes of this Act, a person who contracts with any contractor or sub-contractor is the employer of any workers employed by that contractor or sub-contractor –
(a) if that contractor or sub-contractor is unable to comply with its duties in terms of this Act; or
(b) if the contractor or sub-contractor is unable to ensure the health and safety of its employees on account of the nature of the work that is to be performed or the nature of the workplace in which the work is to be performed.

Huawei is South Korean as far as I know...

Huawei is a 100% Chinese company owned by staff, started by a Chinese ex-general, with strong Chinese government ties and alleged by some (eg in the US and Australia) to still also have strong Chinese military ties.

I would actually prefer that they bring in skilled Chinese workers to set up the network properly, rather than having to train locals, simply because our education system is failing. The quality workers that SA have produced are already being trained or already working. The ones that are left likely didn't receive proper proper high school education which would be the basis of any further training that ZTE would have to provide, which would explain why things go slower with local staff.

To put it more simply: I would like the network I'm using to be set up properly the first time and not have to complain about poor connectivity to a call centre and then wait weeks or months for anyone to fix it, if they ever get around to it.

who will maintain this network?

It sounds to me like this is yet another case of yet another SAn government department being, for all intents and purposes, broken. What exactly are people supposed to do? Life has to go on, one has to work around the broken departments, we can't have the entire country, all business, all job creation, all development grind to a halt just because almost every government department is broken. You name it, CIPRO, home affairs, firearms, passports, IDs, ICASA, PanSALB, DAC, birth certificates, motor vehicle licensing, learners licenses, drivers licenses ... it's all broken, broken, broken. Six months has become the standard turnaround time for getting anything done in government IF you are lucky. Yet all these departments still burdening the stressed taxpayers.

You bet VC is behind the leak, if u recall some article on MYBB VC head honcho said they will wait and see how long CellC can hold out.
Now you know what he meant.

Cell C sets ZTE employee record straight

Cell C clarified the ZTE employee issue today, explaining that they have nothing to do with the Chinese employees who were detained for a short period and that the media reports were inaccurate and poorly researched.

“The workers are not employed by Cell C in any way, shape and form,” said Cell C.

“The information stems from an article in Business Times that was poorly researched and tendentiously written. As an example, ZTE provided the journalist yesterday with the facts that it had only been 4 workers (3 in Durban and 1 in Cape Town) and not 16 and that all have left police detention after producing their passport, which they did not carry on them while having dinner. The journalist refused to make adjustments,” said Cell C.

Cell C added that ZTE is dealing with the matter and cooperating fully with the authorities.

There's a lot wrong with this. Firstly, we have enough people to employ locally. Secondly, we have enough illegal immigrants that do not add any value to society, and thirdly, they're doing a good job, so go pick on some of those who aren't.

ummmmm... they are using Huawei (Chinese imported workers) to roll out most of their 8ta network.

Perhaps Telkom blew the whistle?
I wonder what Trevor Noah is going to do about this?

Where have you been living? You don't just pick up these specialists at employment agencies you know...

It's normal for an international supplier to bring in their own workforce...it happens all over the world. It is the expired paperwork that is the problem. Blame internal affairs.

I heard that VC have refused Huawei workers (also Chinese) from all their sites... can anyone confirm this? RPM?

Huawei is a shady company. They were banned from Telkom premises years ago, dunno if this is still the case though.
