Hi all

Recently installed a 4MB line at my place (took forever) The ADSL worked for a few hours and then all of a sudden my router would not sync to the exchange.

I called and explained the problem and Telkom sent out a technician and she replaced the DSLAM or whatever but ever since then my router will not sync on the line and they have sent out 2 technicians and their little usb adsl modems sync perfectly, they told me that my router is faulty, I did not believe that so i brought it into work and hooked it up to our dsl here and it worked perfectly (synced up & ppp connected) i then took my work router home to test and that also never sync'd at my place I then took my router to my neighbors place and tested it there and it also worked perfetly.....

So now i am sitting with a ADSL connection at my place that only works with Telkom usb modems WTF!!!! I called and logged a fault and this was 3 days ago.......Still waiting for a call back from TELSKUM....these guys drive me crazy!!!

So has anybody else experienced anything like this?

If you log in to the router and look at the router logs, are you getting any errors or are any of the tests failing ?

Just copy and paste the log here:

I have a billion BIPAC-7402 not quite sure where to check the logs...

Could it be that the telephone cable you are using is faulty? Maybe you've been using the same cable at your house, but using different ones everywhere else? Try using different cables and filters...

tried using different cables, the cable that is connected to my router is the one the technician used also and it connected with his modem.

I have seen the exact same thing happen before with a Billion device.

The reason was this:

The router's sync settings were set to "Auto Sync-Up" instead of "G.DMT" or "ADSL 2+" so all of a sudden the router wouldn't sync anymore.

Once the setting was changed and the router restarted, all worked fine.

+1... heap big um good advice this.

@ k00l_3

Some questions;

work router model = ???
work line speed = ???
neighbour line speed = ???

thanx guys appreciate all the replies and help

I have tried resetting factory defaults ....no go

work router = netgear dg834gt
work line speed = 4MB
neighbor router = similar netgear to works
neighbor line speed = 4MB

Will have to try D's advice once I get home from work.

Yes , the ADSL light just flashes and the status in the router config pages says "xDSL not syncronized."

Like I said it worked intermittently at first then died completely ,I called and a tech came and replaced the DSLAM I was connected to and since then my router has never been able to connect but both Telkom technicians were able to connect using their "Telkom Usb ADSL Modems" saying that the problem was with my router but my router works perfectly at work and my neighbors place ( I live in a complex so we are all connected to the same exchange) and it works perfectly..... this is a weird problem to have and Telkom cant seem to tell me whats wrong and since letting them know my router works everywhere but at my place they have not called me back and I will end up paying for a months worth of ADSL + ISP for nothing.....

Did you try resetting the router to factor defaults?

To reset the DG834GT, use a pen to depress the "Reset" button on the back for 45 seconds while the unit is powered on.

I have a Billion Bipac 7402 and I did try the factory defaults reset but still no luck.

I don't have any other devices connected to the wall, only got the line for internet.

You really should try and force it to ADSL2+ or G.DMT. That should fix the problem, if it doesn't chances are you might need to try and get a different adsl modem, different make too preferably.

Not all exchanges use the same equipment, or version of it even. Chances are your line is on newer equipment to prepare for the 8mbit lines, in which case you need a modem that supports the new language Telkom's hardware is talking. Chances are you just need to force it, if that still doesn't work either firmware upgrade or new modem.

I for one can attest as to how good the Netgear modems work. Usually they just work.

Some logical deduction?

When the techie linked his/her notebook via your modem it worked.
Your modem works at your buddy's place and at your work.
When connected to your PC, no modem works.

Ergo - the problem is not your modem but either your PC or the cable linking them.

Is your PC's network card or USB port OK? (depending on which connection you are using.)
