Ubuntu drops Gnome, implements Unity

Well they wouldn't plan to change the interface if its not going to be better.

The same way they just decided to move all the buttons to the left?

I haven't used Unity yet, but I'll have to wait and see how it all pans out. If it turns out to be horrible I'll install xfce or LXDE.

Breaking news! Desktop environment developers butthurt that a single Linux distribution isn't going to bundle them front and centre anymore!

I find it annoying how everyone acts like Ubuntu is the only ****ing distro around these days. Personally, I think Ubuntu is a poorly-constructed mish-mash of unwanted crap, but I'm a bare-metal kinda guy like that.

KDE should be a lot more stable at that stage also and it wont be difficult to install gnome shell 3- (there will probably be a gubuntu release)

Im positive about the unity switch though, they are thinking outside the box, not just creating another windows clone and I like that.

Agreed, like the move to wayland to replace X was also a breath of fresh air.

you mean ubuntu isn't the only distro?

I have tried a few different distros and I keep coming back to ubuntu, it just works. To me its now gotten to the stage where its easier to install and use than windows.

Neat! Willing to test it out, if it's not up to standard I could probably just install gnome or KDE..

Gnome only have themselves to blame, its a solid desktop, but the "look and feel", ie, the interface for gnome feels like it was done by a 400 year old leper with no eye-site.

Frankly I cant wait to see if Ubuntu can make a better interface.

What devs in FOSS land have still not realized is.. that no one wants to use their product unless they get a designer to give it style.

Me too! I actually fancied the transparent taskbars in Ubuntu 9.04 & 9.10, don't know why they removed it. .... just felt a bit more funky and new than the old solid taskbars.

And most people have decent computers nowadays, we can handle a bit of eye candy.

Yeah, if you cant afford the hardware, then Gentoo or Arch are for you :D /run /hide

For 6 months I switched over to Ubuntu... was a very good experience at first... then I hit graphics driver issues after an update... then I needed a Photoshop equivalent for creating web graphics... and no GIMP + InkScape just can't do what Photoshop+ImageReady does... so I tried running PS through WINE... it worked but was too clunky... so I'm back on Vista...

Sad day... very sad... :(

Back on Vista? That's going from bad to worse.

*Click that "Anytime Upgrade" thingie in Vista, it doesn't work anymore, but will take you to a page where you can upgrade to Windows 7.
