iPhone 4 personal hotspot problem solved, Vodacom explains

But this is not an issue with Apple surely as there have not been a wide problem reported, seems only us (i stand corrected) so Vodacom and MTN should sort their apn out :(.

Knowing apple is focusing on getting their pads out , like they will focus on a request like this :p :D

If the iPhone 4 doesn't connect to the proper APN then the tethering and personal hotspot functionality of the device doesn't work, Vodacom explained.

Okay, so its the customers fault or what? What's the proper APN then? How is this an Apple problem if I can change the APN? Perhaps I've the wrong end of the stick...

I think the APN needs special settings to work with the iPhone tethering, hence the separate access points (iPhone.Vodacom.ZA, dunno about MTN). Good luck with trying to get Apple to change their iPhones so it works with the regular APNs...
Mine works fine on 8ta through MTN.

Mine works fine on my iPad but when i try and connect with my laptop, it connects but no internet connection.

It is actually an Apple thing. Let me explain:

Basically if you use an APN other than iphone.vodacom.za (which Apple dictates), IOS disables the Hotspot and Tethering options.

You might remember it took Apple a long time to release the original iPhone in SA and to ensure iPhones brought in by subs would work, we enabled the 'internet' APN for them. This is still the case.

But the config file Apple pushed down to the handset (via iTunes) will change it to iphone.vodacom.za and if it does not see this APN on the handset, it will disable the Hotspot function.

Easiest way to rectify this is to reset the setting on the iPhone which will then set the APN correctly.

Just go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network and enter the relevant APN (either 'iphone.vodacom.za' or 'mymtn').

When Vodacom brought out the iPhone, they had their APNs specified as the only valid APNs for iPhones obtained from them. If you specify any APN not belonging to Vodacom on an iPhone obtained from Vodacom, then tethering and hotspots are disabled.

This is not the case with iPhones obtained from MTN.

The request made by Vodacom to Apple is to allow any APN rather than just Vodacom specific APN's and this will only be available via an OS update. Who knows when this will happen.

Talk about anti-competitiveness from Vodacom.

And once again, Afrihost is defending South Africa's internet environment. AFRIHOST FTW!

Oh, come on. How is this Vodacom being anti-competitive? It's an IOS thing, and as you pointed out that's controlled by Apple.

And, again as you pointed out, Vodacom asked Apple to resolve it. Why would they do that if they're trying to be anti-competitive?

These APN's were create years ago, by Apple. The hotspot feature came out a few weeks ago. Vodacom must be very clever to have engineered this so many years in advance.

The proper APNs are listed in the article: 'iphone.vodacom.za' and 'mymtn'. Most (if not all) data-capable devices allow you to change the APN so that you can use it on other networks as well as private and other custom APNs. In iPhone's case the ability to change the APN allows you to use the device on another operator's "tethering plan".

This is not the case with iPhones obtained from MTN.

Are you 100% sure about that? Have you changed the APN settings of an MTN iPhone (and/or inserted a Cell C SIM) to test it? Not trying to be facetious here... It seems strange that MTN iPhones wouldn't behave the same considering that they also use a different APN from the default.

I had the same problem, just reset your network settings on your phone

Settings - > General -> Reset - > Reset Network Settings

When the phone come up again it should work fine.

My iPhone4 was bought from Vodacom. I have a Virgin sim in it. My APN is vdata. I have the Personal Hotspot feature enabled, and it works. But according to was said, my APN should be iphone.vodacom.za for this to be enabled.
Something doesn't add up...

Love that photo :) Cracks me up every time.

+1
I had my fair share of afrihost woes over the years but Gian has a way of disarming you with that look rofl. By far the coolest CEO image out there.

Jailbroken?

But most likely the handset checks your network ID (from the SIM) and check for the correct APN. I assume vdata is the Virgin APN?

Ja, nice when the sim fixes all that good stuff for you!
