The proper APNs are listed in the article: 'iphone.vodacom.za' and 'mymtn'. Most (if not all) data-capable devices allow you to change the APN so that you can use it on other networks as well as private and other custom APNs. In iPhone's case the ability to change the APN allows you to use the device on another operator's "tethering plan".
Are you 100% sure about that? Have you changed the APN settings of an MTN iPhone (and/or inserted a Cell C SIM) to test it? Not trying to be facetious here... It seems strange that MTN iPhones wouldn't behave the same considering that they also use a different APN from the default.

I am just a lay person so please tell me in simple words - can I use the "personal hotspot" capability on my Ipad 3 if I am a Vodacom user? I tried changing the APN setting to iphone.vodacom.za and I used "internet" but neither work for me..
