iPhone 4 personal hotspot problem solved, Vodacom explains

The hotspot feature works just dandy on my MTN iPhone4. Right from day one that the update software was released, it works everytime without fail.

The proper APNs are listed in the article: 'iphone.vodacom.za' and 'mymtn'. Most (if not all) data-capable devices allow you to change the APN so that you can use it on other networks as well as private and other custom APNs. In iPhone's case the ability to change the APN allows you to use the device on another operator's "tethering plan".



Are you 100% sure about that? Have you changed the APN settings of an MTN iPhone (and/or inserted a Cell C SIM) to test it? Not trying to be facetious here... It seems strange that MTN iPhones wouldn't behave the same considering that they also use a different APN from the default.

Using a 3rd party APN on my iPhone obtain from MTN, tethering and hotspots available. My boss has an iPhone obtain from Vodacom. When using the same 3rd party APN, tethering and hotspots disabled.

It is not future engineering, it is just that Vodacom specified their APN's as approved APN's which were then configure into the OS via the carrier bundles.

I have an iPhone 4 I bought from a friend. I don't know if he got it from MTN or Vodacom, but I am using it on Vodacom with the iphone APN and the hotspot works fine.

Now, I am considering moving to Cell C because the VC network is just rubbish in Durban these days (dropped calls, no service, etc). Will I have personal hotspot problems if I port to Cell C from VC?

This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the vodacom shops would just enable the iphone.vodacom.za apn on the customer's sim card when they buy the phone, but nooooo...

Go here and create a custom profile for your SP. I use the APN "internet" on vodacom and it works 100% when I generate the profile using this site. http://help.benm.at/help.php

Personally I had issues with the iphone APN.

What a load of rubbish. This is not Apple's issue. Your tethering settings are controlled via the carrier file. Vodacom CHOSE to force the iphone APN for tethering in the carrier file. MTN didnt. If Vodacom are unhappy with it, they can change the carrier file to unlock tethering for any APN, or simply provision everyone for the iPhone APN automatically.

Carrier files are updated independently from iOS.

Does anyone know if I can tether an 8ta sim on a non-jail broken iphone (a stock standard version).

I am interrested in an ipad but with wifi only. So need to tether my iphone to the ipad while out of the office. Or maybe another solution thenl, please?

EDIT. Got it just change APN to internet and pair with bluetooth. Easy as pie...

Looks like you cannot use it. Vodacom needs to activate this function first.
