DStv and TopTV subscriber growth figures

Only 2% increase in Premium subscribers.Methinks their offering will need to be a little more compelling in the forthcoming year or else expect negative growth on premium subscribers.

Can't believe DSTV actually increased subscribers in the premium list - I was expecting a loss.

Quite a few people I have spoken to have cancelled.

It's good that TopTV is already at 300 000 subscribers. They said 300 000 would be the amount of subs they'd need to break even.

Maybe now they can offer some more services like PVR, HD, Dual and sport.

A printable TV guide wouldn't hurt either.

We definitely need good competition in the pay TV market. Cannot have DSTV dictate pricing !

If Dstv and TopTV subscribers are increasing and Telkom fixed line subscribers are decreasing, does that mean that the amount of digital piracy is decreasing?

Well MonoChoice lost me on Sunday! I'm going to support the underdog... called TopTV today, will install on Wednesday!

If sport isn't a requirement TopTV is actually good.

Fixed line subscribers does not necessarily include ADSL subscribers. For example, could mean just voice.

If the subscriber base increased they should drop their prices. I am referring to DSTV as TopTV might not have enough subscribers yet. The way I see it DSTV pays a fixed amount for the channels and divide by the number of subscribers + margin. This means they should drop the prices of all the bouquets even premium as the premium has the channels of the other bouquets too.

Dropping the prices will further increase growth which will allow them to drop it even further.

The tone of the intro to the article is a LITTLE disingenuous.

"DSTV 17%, but TopTV 100% over the same period!! TopTV must be doing way better!"

Keeping in mind that doubling a low subscriber base is SIGNIFICANTLY easier thank growing a comparatively humongous user base. As the article only later states, that 17% growth on DSTV equates to almost the ENTIRE user-base of TopTV.

You also assume that fixed line subscribers are pirates.

I still say no to TopTV until they get some HD and PVR!

Not too bothered by the HD channels, but argree on the PVR - as soon as they have their own PVR, I will strongly consider switching.

They will point to their other costs going up. Overheads, salaries, etc.

I actually like the TopTV offering. I mainly watch the FX series channels (Las Vegas, Stargate Atlantis, Fringe, Boston Legal, The Walking Dead, Archer and one or two others) and the Discovery Science. Oh, and KidsCo is actually child-friendly.

Occasionally there'll be something good on one of the movie channels, but I'm rarely in the mood to sit through and concentrate on an entire movie anyway :D

Premium +2%
Compact +13%
Select +18%
PVR +19%

so how many subscribers does each have? im interested to compare compact with top tv seeing as how those are kind of on par in terms of channels offered

DStv’s growth is 90,000 subscribers shy of TopTVs entire customer base.

I lol'd at first, but I am glad to see that theres competition. That is where it all starts!
