Truant teachers were absent for close to 7.5 million days last year, according to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

"We have the highest rate of absenteeism in SADC [the Southern African Development Community]. We're at 19 days [average per teacher] a year. It's huge. An average of 10 percent nationally," she told reporters at Parliament on Tuesday.

It is understood that teacher absenteeism in other SADC countries is an average of nine days per teacher per year.

According to the department, there were 392,000 teachers employed at public schools around the country in 2012.

With each teacher, on average, being absent for 19 days last year, the total number of days absent multiplies out to 7,448,000.

Motshekga said there was "great concern" in her department about teacher accountability -- arriving at school on time, and teaching for the full day.

Her department was looking at introducing an electronic clock-in system to replace manual attendance registers.

Responding to a question, she described the average of 19 days taken off by public school teachers as "pure absenteeism", but said serious illness had also played a part in the high figure.

"Part of it is the burden of disease, where you find teachers over a period of time have not been to school, but in most instances it's just poor administration."

This was the reason the department wanted to switch to an electronic clock-in system.

Motshekga said transport problems were also a reason many teachers were late, or absent from work.

Hence the reason for biometrics. Make these teachers responsible for their absenteeism.

What is the difference to all other state departments etc ? They are always on break/tea time when you get there, they work uber slow, no care attitude..

How can you be a teacher and not have a 2nd hand car at least? Transport problems... always an issue. Get YOUR OWN FCKING CAR!!! I had to buy a car or else I get fired for not getting to work.

Funny how "transport" is only an issue for the lazy. We have people that use taxis daily. They are never late unless there is a very big taxi strike and then they use lift clubs.

Pathetic excuse.

Pay them more as they do the most important job.

LOL! It's certainly a very important role and our educational system is in dire straits, but that's not the solution to rampant absenteeism.

These idiots will not work even for more pay. They will just get another way out of it. We need to be selective when we decide who studies to be a teacher. Not just hand out bursaries because we can.

I remember me and my friends meeting a teacher at our school at a house selling beer. He asked what we were doing there and why we were'nt in class. It was awkward.

Why is everyone upset, this is the African way and all government or semi government institutions do the same.

Most surprising thing in this article - no direct blame on apartheid.

Yip.

But if you are a teacher.. you should be able to afford a 2nd hand cheap car at least.

Four holidays a year and an additional 19 days you can take :D

Talk about the ideal job....

What will you do? Fire them. Same problem in the end no teachers at schools.

Well what sort of accountability is there currently? They know that they are protected if there isn't sufficient proof.
