ADSL been dead for a few days.
Current router is still on and Wifi and ethernet still working with local streaming but will not connect to the WAN.
Called Telkom who sent a technician, did the tests and they say its my router.

My current router is a Netgear DG834GT which has been working like a charm since 2005.

Netgear still a good option? I don't need too many fancy features just Wifi and must be stable as can be. Would be great if it is compatible with any future Telkom upgrades.

I see telkom has the N300 Wireless ADSL2+ for R839.

Thanks.

buy a tplink from uniterm direct(anyone that suites your budget) , not that telkom branded crap :P

Subscribing to this thread - pretty much in the same boat... Decisions, decisions...

Oh - any point in waiting things out, for the upgrades(?) to the new WiFi standard?

I only buy and trust Billion routers. My first one is still going strong after 6 years and bought another one 3 months ago for a WDS setup :)

I wont even entertain netgear anymore, I threw away a bunch of DGN2000 and DGN2200's because they were terribly unreliable.
TP-Link were ok but Im finding that I need to phone some remote sites every second day and get someone to reboot the router for it to start working again.
Dlink has been ok but not the most stable.
The best routers I found to be the linksys X3000 routers and to a lesser extent the WAG320N.

With regards tp-link instability, it seems to vary between different models. However, I flashed both my tp-links with dd-wrt nearly 2 months ago, I've only done one reboot since. Performance had been remarkably stable. Even my speedtest stability had improved

That is not want I wanted to hear... Going to take a drive to canal walk after work and hopefully someone has something in stock. I will google for reviews/problems before buying. Need a router tonight.

Havent had any problems with the Netgear DNG2200 at all and has the best wifi coverage and stable

The Linksys brand was all but destroyed when they were bought by Cisco. They went from the best to junk.

Personally I find Netgear to be the best at the moment, but they generally cost a bit more.

I'd take what the Telkom techie says with a pinch of salt: I spent 3 weeks backwards & forwards to a client of mine with a modem that refused to connect. Telkom says it is my gear, yet "my gear" worked fine at my place.

After 3 weeks of my client looking at me funny, Telkom fessed up and told us that the DLSAM had been nuked by lightning. All of a sudden my faulty modem was working just fine.

Yeah he wanted to leave without testing much but I insisted he tested with another router so we went and fetched one from somewhere. As soon as he plugged his in it sync'd.

Hi There,
I have had no issues with Netgear. That is until lightning tickled the ADSL circuit but the rest of the router was fine like yours sounds.
You could also look at just purchasing a modem of the routing part of the current box is working OK. It may save you a few hard earned Rands.
I replace the Netgear though with a tp-Link and not had any issues with it at this point in time.

Regards

Tim

It's 2014, is the Netgear DGN2200 router modem still a good buy?

Looking for a ADSL router with good coverage and simple to set up.
