WhatsApp to start charging R9.81 ($0.99) per year now

WhatsApp, the hugely popular cross-platform instant messaging app that lets you message other users for free over the internet, is starting to charge an annual fee for its service.

It will now cost R9.81 ($0.99) per year for you to be able to message your friends on WhatsApp. However, both new and current users will get the first year for free. The update applies to all versions of the app, including both Android and iPhone.

Mobile messaging applications like WhatsApp and Viber have exploded alongside the increased adaptation of smartphones, and have virtually replaced SMS as the preferred form of messaging between mobiles. WhatsApp currently boats some 250 million active users.

This will be the death of Whatsapp. The problem is, a most teenagers don't have a credit card and can't just easily buy something from an appstore.
 
I only paid once when i installed. When i check my sub info it says lifetime :D

WM allows you to purchase off your cellphone bill.
Hopefully other app stores will go this route.
 
they've been threatening to charge for ages now.

every now and then i get a message to say my service has been extended.
 
Well worth it. They are going to make hundreds of millions from that. Keep the service quality up. It can go towards bringing out a desktop version and supporting syncing everything between multiple devices. (phone, tab, pc, work pc all on synced whatsapp would be epic)

I might be wrong ... but I think I saw prepaid credit cards you can buy @ Dischem. Looked like a visas card. I suppose it works by you buy it ... load a value onto it (not sure how ... I did not pick up the pack to read instructions) ... and away you go. I will have a propper look when there again.

R10.00 is nothing today. You will save a bunch compared to normal rates.

Sorry for my ignorance but what has changed??? AFAIK it has always been like this i.e. your first year free and after that the yearly fee of $0.99. I'm not a WhatsApp user so just asking.
 
On the Apple App store its a once off payment of $1; so its lifetime; but on all the other devices "android" ect its free for the first year, then you have to pay $1 for each year after that.

But what i noticed on the android devices they just keep extending it, after the first year.

Very strange system they have.:confused:

Quite clever actually. Get as many folk using as possible and then charge them when they are hooked and it becomes a must have.

New Delhi: Since the day BlackBerry announced its plans to bring its messaging service BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to Android and iOS, there has been a buzz in tech circles as well as among consumers. But except that the service will be available to Android users "this summer," the company has not said anything on its availability.
But alongside the launch of the BlackBerry Q5 on Tuesday in India, Sunil Lalvani, managing director, BlackBerry India, gave us more information on the launch plans of the BBM service for Android. When asked Lalvani to narrow down the availability details, he said, "The service is coming to Android this summer. But summer as per North America, where it remains till September." When asked if that means that BBM for Android would be available before the end of September, his response was in the affirmative.
This means that those who have been waiting for the arrival of BBM on Android would not need to wait for too long. BlackBerry on Tuesday also launched its mid-range BlackBerry 10 OS smartphone - the BlackBerry Q5 at Rs 24,990.

I paid for a 1 year subscription. Why not. I support them, it's a great program and honestly, R10 won't kill anyone's bank!

+1.. Well Worth it, I paid for a 5 year subscription and got 25% off, paid $3.71
