Watch out for crummy bundled mobile data and tablet deal prices

The TM one is actually a good deal by the looks of it, and who would've though MTN coming to the party.

Great post. I also spotted that TM deal the other day, but unfortunately I'd just bought my wife a Galaxy Tab cash the week before!

Wow!

I need/want a tablet... TM has a good deal!

Buy most of my devices in that manner.

Remember with my first Top Up contract from Vodacom I got a big TV and DVD player and a decent nokia phone for their combined purchase cost (if monthly price x 24 months), the airtime was "free", never loaded extra airtime.

Galaxy S2 the same with MTN contract, monthly price x 24 was basically what the device would have cost back then, airtime a free bonus, never loaded any extra airtime.

Seems this TM deal can do the same for me.

... to encourage consumers to sign 24-month contracts they often bundle tablets with their data packages. It is often assumed that these bundles will save you money, ..

Who can assume after all these years of especially Vodacom & MTN ripping-off customers - first voice call costs, then data bundles on their own - that they'd suddenly be trying to do good for us. Always act with scepticism when it comes to the networks, is my motto.

TM is wrong or do they charge R3000 for 500MB?
Yip, R125p/m on SmartInternet Saver: 500MB roaming data + 1.5GB NightSurfer data + "Unlimited WiFi" (10GB before throttling).

So, the article is correct. Question is whether I do need roaming data on the contract. Even I do have, it costs me R95 bundle on SIM Sonke. I don't need Night Surfer and I have no access to Telkom WiFi either. But it is a different story.

I haven't looked at the Vodaom deal sheets in ages, but I recall that the difference between "phone-free" contracts and contracts with phones included was a joke. Haven't got a contract phone, never will have one again till the pricing makes it worthwhile. Buy a phone and go prepaid.

Buy now and avoid tomorrow's great deal!

There is another factor not considered in this analysis: the changing price of data, and the change in data requirements over the contract period. These are complete unknowns. If you buy now, you might find yourself paying too much for your data before the contract is up, or alternatively, you might find yourself needing a substantially different amount of data to what you are contracted for.

There is always a benefit of sorts in getting something today that you cannot really afford ...

One more reason of being a member of myBB - you get valuable advice when renewing your contract....

By FNB standards the networks pricing is much better.

Yea that's quite disappointing on FNB side actually.

They entered with a bang and threatened the networks as you could rather get phones and tablets through them - and now they're they the networks 5-7% but with additional data

I finished my iPad payments with FNB and doubt I'll get a phone or tablet through them.
