Winners and a loser in the computing device war

How does vodacom know what devices are connecting to its network?

From the devices MAC address each device is supposed to have a unique one.

The only penetrating that No-Shame-el Joosub and Vodascum are doing, is of it's customers...

Sigh. Why this need to denigrate at every opportunity? Do you always see the negative in everything? Mommy force you to eat your veggies? It's really tiresome reading these juvenile vents.

The more I think about the angrier I get.

A senior executive in one of South Africa's greatest companies takes the time and trouble to briefly answer a question, and all you can do is spill your bile. Shame on you. You do nothing to improve the world, but sneer and smirk from the sidelines. You're an embarrassment.

Every device has a unique type identifier. This is detected by the network when you attach. Google IMEI.
And if I'm connecting via a mifi type modem? Right now I've got three laptops, a tablet, and a phone connected to one - what does that register as?

Funnily enough not for much longer, at least for those ad agencies that sniff MAC addresses in order to target ads. Starting from iOS 8 MAC addresses will be scrambled until you choose to join a network. :)

I assume the MiFi router will be registered, which will count under PC connectivity - maybe Jannie can confirm.

It's called freedom of expression big boy. I respect your opinion...now respect mine. Your second line shows who the juvenile really is here....

You can also use a usb modem in a notebook, in a router, or in some tablets. Vodacom wouldn't have a clue as to how it is used.

Clearly the device that connects to the network is registered. In your case we'll know it's a Mi-Fi device and will record and report it as such.

Mi-Fi devices constitutes a (very) small % of the device count, BTW.

I fondly remember the days when MyBB was frequented by members who could engage in robust debate on the topic at hand.

But then we saw the arrival of the juvenile internet user for whom it's somehow 'cool' to make these kind of remarks, showing little else than a lack of character and education.

Thanks for the clarification, which is as expected (Mi-Fi device).

If you had to multiply the Mi-Fi count by (say) 4 would it still be insignificant? I use four as some devices can connect up to 8 devices simultaneously.

Right now my wife, kids and their friends are connected to my Wi-Fi device - 1 ipad, 2 tablets, 3 smartphones.

Maybe on a network like TM's, which will have a small base but with a higher % of non-voice devices.

I'll get our latest count but it'll be a few thousand out of a base exceeding 17 million.

Indeed. MyBB used to be a discussion forum. Now its like an opinion forum where if my "know it all" opinion is questioned, I get defensive and make personal remarks about other poster. But this kind of behavior is rife across many aspects of daily life.

nobody is infringing you freedom of expression they simply are expressing their dismay at your inability to engage in meaningful discussion

an opinion that is idiotic, unreasoned and malformed deserves no respect or defence from third parties beyond the right of the holder to hold that opinion and to express same opinion without fear of violence; a fear of responses to a bad opinion is certainly not an infringement to the holder any more than being exposed to an idiotic opinion is an infringement on the hapless reader/hearers rights
