Charting Fibre speed over time.

Vox has a quality network. They have been here a while and people flock to them but their networks keeps on performing great.

Network wise I think Vox and Telkom is head to head for top position to be honest. Vox might take it though. The mybb stats and ISP of the year award just don't take things like these in consideration. People also not separating Telkom ISP from now Openserve ADSL/Fibre issues.....

Telkom just gets blamed by everyone, convenient scapegoat :D

Just an update: Our Wholesale division has acknowledged receipt of your request for assistance and are engaging the 3rd party ISPs as we speak.



I am not 100% sure if the communication of your complaint will be redirected to channel directly to you and thus bypassing our visibility into the teams’ engagement with you or if we will be kept in the loop.



However: whichever way this might be done, please do not hesitate to contact Openserve (me) again if you are not receiving any feedback. I will also be checking in via email or WhatsApp during the course of Friday the 11th if we (Openserve) have not received any information or correspondence in this regard. Any feedback we receive will off-course be shared with you as soon as possible, but I suspect the ISPs will most likely communicate with you directly.

If other also find their speed all over the place please add your names. Or should we start a new post to do that. I can also make the code generic so you dont need a database and I can make it so you send your speed details to the emoncms.org servers that is free and cloud based.

Remember there is a difference between getting international bandwidth from IS to reselling their products which then use their IPC, we use them for some bandwidth but we have our own IPC capacity which is more than likely the issue here.

I am willing to test that if you give me a test account. The thing is I don't really care what is causing it. I am paying for a service that I am not getting. How would you feel if you pay for R100 of petrol but I only put R86 in your tank. If petrol stations did that they would be taken to court and found guilty for stealing. Why is it OK if ISP s do that. I am not going to let this go. In fact I think I should get a refund for the 6 months I did not get my full tank of petrol.

What will it take to start a class action suit against ISP s that take the users for a ride ? I am willing to contribute to a case like that. The same way MTN stole peoples money for connecting the phone to the network. They should pay it back.

I just got a call from ICASA. They are sending me the complaint form and then the process will start.

True I was actually like you mentioned referring to ISP simply reselling IS products. They usually can be identified by the fact that all of them get a IS ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.dynamic.is.co.za or xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.dynamic.isdsl.co.za

Got to agree with your point, the only problem with your analogy is that bandwidth cannot be stored and used later (unlike petrol which can be stored for a reasonable amount of time). It's perhaps more accurate to compare it with buying 10 return plane tickets to Dubai on Emirates, every day for six months, and when the 10 people arrive at the airport, only 3 are allowed to board.

The other problem that I see is that you have incurred expenses and time in both creating a tool to measure their poor performance as well as conducting the testing, and have gone to the trouble of recording it in order to prove it to them. They are therefore getting the benefit of the feedback that you have provided for mahala. IS are not a mickey mouse outfit either, they are big players in the corporate space, and they have great tools and expertise. Surely they know about this problem already? It's this thought that grinds me, that they probably know about it, but haven't addressed it.

I agree in principle. The problem with living in a litigious society such as the US is that everyone sues everyone for everything, and there are a number of downsides to it -- you cannot even sell a cup of hot coffee without some sort of disclaimer and 10 warnings attached. Or install a sharpened stick in your chimney in case a burglar injures himself. And in the end, the only ones making money are the lawyers (kind of reminiscent of our under-performing government). Then again, there's a side of me that says that if it is a fat cat that is cheating and stealing from common people, we should let 'em have it.
 
I understand that I wont get 100Mbps all the time. I am in IT my self so understand it. But when you get 7 Mbps that is not on. I agree with you, they know it is an issue and they have the tools to find the problem. But every time I phone and logged a call I got some poor help desk person who red a script of questions, it gets frustrating explaining the same problem over and over again. They don't know what the problem on the backbone is, but IS does. So a senior engineer should come to my house and I will show them in person. MWEB scheduled sessions with their senior back end staff. They enabled traces and port monitoring etc. But could not find the problem. So they said. Is it something we should just accept and not complain about? On the one hand its is less hassle to not complain about it. Just find a ISP that offers enough that it is acceptable, I think that is what most people end up doing (and the ISP count on that). But on the other hand I feel they should not be allowed to bully us and get away with getting money for something they are not providing.

Oh they know about it, they just don't give a fsck. If MyBB or someone had to publish an article about it they would feign ignorance, thank you for bringing it to their attention, promise to address the issue etc etc Meanewhile you got all these ISPs on their backbone playing dumb as well? Aikona!
 
I may have missed it earlier in the thread - but how are you chopping and changing accounts?

Far as I can see WA and VOX both require you to "migrate" to them and buy a bundled service before they'll sell you their "fibre" data packages. Or am I misunderstanding the situation?

If you can get the account you just enter the login in your router, same as ADSL, and you can even use "ADSL" accounts too.

If you can get the account, yes - that's why I'm curious. None of the ISPs mentioned sell standalone data accounts for Fibre - they all bundle them and the migration process is a pain. I saw it mentioned that they've also started throttling ADSL accounts so people can't just buy them for use on 100mbps fibre. (although I don't understand why - data is data) So I'm curious if OP is using "fibre" accounts for these tests and if so, how.

OP is using a normal Vox ADSL Fatpipe data only account. Even if you go to afrihost or axxess website or any ISP as a matter of fact just buy the adsl capped or uncapped account and it will work on your Openserve fibre line.

Uncapped accounts are obviously speed limited so buy the correct speed for your fibre line and as far as I know most if not all capped accounts run at line speed unless specified that their is a speed limit like Vox uncapped bolt on which has a max speed of 10Mbps so I'm not sure where you read ISP's are starting to speed limit adsl accounts. Won't happen because of 2 things. Max VDSL speed is 40Mbps and most capped accounts allow more than one concurrent connections.
 
That's news to me. A VOX rep I spoke to on live chat went so far as to say their normal fatpipe accounts are "not compatible" with fibre. I actually have two of the promo 400GB Fatpipe accounts from back in the day with a metric ton of rollover data, but was told they would not work on Fibre, nevermind at 100mbps.

Are people just buying a line separately and using ADSL accounts successfully?
