Just got a call from senior WebAfrica Technical team. It has been escilated to them as a urgent case. I also got the ICASA consumer complaint case number. Turning out to be a good Friday.
WA will tell you (correctly) that the IS network is congested.

It is simple. They have 2 options.

1) I get what I pay for.
or
2) I pay for what I get.

If the network is congested then my payment will also get congested. I want a refund then.

They won't admit it but yeah looks like IS ipc links are congested especially with fibre take up the bandwidth on IS ipc links must have sky rocketed but obviously they will deny it for month just like Afrihost did back when their IPC links were getting congested. They lied to people and finally said sorry.

Been testing with the Cool Ideas account. All was OK until about 3:30 pm. It is not as bad as the IS accounts. But as you can see there are some major drops in speed.

The results of Cool Ideas over 24 hours. I have switched to VOX now just to make sure all is still OK as we see a lot of drops on Cool Ideas as well.

Maybe I should start a new thread with the results of each ISP I tested over the Openserve link.

I have the same issues with Cool Ideas and Octotel, both parties point fingers at the other one, why not be honest and say how it is.

@PBCool, please give us (tech customers) the real situation, then we know and can decide.

If this is a FTTH issue, what do I need to pay to not be affected?

Major dip seems to be from 6pm to 10pm - prime time for all ISPs, and the exact time period IPC capacity issues rear their heads.

@jacof - out of interest, is anything else happening on your connection during these tests? Other users / devices accessing the net? A few Netflix / Youtube streams or downloads or similar would negatively affect the speedtest results while not being the fault of the ISP being tested.

@Seeyou last night we watched downloaded movies not Netflix. But what I will do is enable my routers bandwidth tracking so then I will have graphs of what was downloaded by the router and we can line up the 2 charts. But to be honest even if we watch Netflix you will see in the Video I posted that Netflix only uses about 5 - 10 Mbps every couple of seconds. Thus we will not see the drop down to 30 Mbps if we watch Netflix.

I forgot that I enabled Netflow on the Mikrotik and I am pushing that data to a PRTG Network Monitor. The ISPs said the same thing. Something on my network is using the data. So now I know what is using the data as Netflow shows the top talkers and what protocols are using data.

Here you can see my network is idle most of the time and only the test that fire every 10 minutes use the bandwidth.

I had a look at the Netflow Data and it seems there was extra usage at around 7:45 - 8:15

But that was the only time as far as I can see.

What issues are you having? This hasn't been brought to my attention as yet?

It's not IPC capacity related, we never exceed our capacity. Seems to be the Openserve network that does this.

@PBCool. It is not the Fibre side. I have shown it is not with many tests now. But if you are willing I will do more test using the CI test account and I will switch between the CI account and the VOX account that I know is stable during that time. I now have the Netflow also up and running to show what is going on on my network. Then we should be able to see where the issue is.

I'm not saying it's the fibre or the line, if you could mail me your graphs on paul at cisp.co.za I'd like to compare with our graphs.

@PBCool if not the fiber or the line then what is it on the Openserve network? I have a direct line to their senior specialist. I will ask him to look into the issue. I did mail you the graphs. Not sure what else you need.

I ran some more tests today using Cool Ideas first and then I switched to VOX around 7:33 pm just to make sure it is not the fiber or line. As you can see all is OK on the VOX side.

Thanks for the mail, so a multitude of factors remember that OS has to carry the respective traffic from your house to our hand over, so if Vox is getting their handover at a location where there is better back haul in place on their network the results would vary. We get ours at Teraco so I imagine that Telkom would have lots of capacity to that point but the results vary it seems.

But then why is VOX able to get it stable and Cool Ideas not ? Surely the users don't have to worry about back haul and all the other reason. That is why you are the ISP and should make sure all is working the way it should be as that is what users are paying for. We should not have to check ISP up en get a lot of excuses as to why the speed is not what it should be. It seems the model where the carrier is separated from the ISP is flawed. Now there are a lot of finger pointing. The ISPs had a lot to say when Telkom was giving out data options and took them to the competition commission http://www.comptrib.co.za/cases/complaint/retrieve_case/1448 . Now we are stuck with this model that is also not working.
