Another reason to buy a PS3...

How is this a reason to buy a PS3 ?
If you're looking for a gaming console, it isn't. Yet another person who believes that a high definition format dictates the success of a gaming console. Even so, I'm still willing to bet we'll be seeing a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360 in the not too distant future.

ah... yes, the narrow minded fools will see this as a big increase for the ps3, but the sad thing is that then most of those people will simply watch movies and make sony a big loss all because sony won the format war, sigh.

ag... dvd is bs when you neeb to back up 500 gb's of data

So would Blu-Ray but admittingly you can get it on say about ten disks. Must be such a sore point for some, this HD-DVD failure, judged by the sentiments posted. :D

Blu-Ray can store a LOT more than 500gb, theoretically. Personally, I'd rather get a giant NAS for the 5k+ that the blu-ray burner costs and store everything on there. I saw this coming but didn't really get why so many people were so adamant about supporting HD-DVD. Still don't, actually. Haven't been bothered to read up on it yet.

Well, backwards compatability definitely isn't a reason. And since I'll bet my left nut that Microsoft with have external Blu-ray drives on the shelves in time for Christmas, this isn't a good reason either.

See, unlike Sony, Microsoft had the good sense not to put all its eggs in one basket. Which Sony has done with the PS3. They were lucky with regards to the Blu-ray drive. However, the excesses of the Cell Processor may prove Sony's undoing; that being that the PS2 was what kept Sony off the verge of bankruptcy and with the PS3 barely breaking even the entire company may be in trouble.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc

Furthermore TDK announced in August 2006 that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers.[70]

Also behind closed doors at CES 2007, Ritek has revealed that they had successfully developed a High Definition optical disc process that extends the disc capacity of both competing formats to 10 layers. That increases the capacity of the discs to 250 GB for Blu-ray compared to 150 GB for HD DVD using the same process. However, they noted that the major obstacle is that current reader and writer technology does not support the additional layers.

So, no, 500GB is very much an exaggeration.

M$ and good sense in the same sentence, now that's funny. Assume that M$ does come out with a Blu-ray drive, who do you think is going to get royalties.
Also check the news, the cell processor plant is on the verge of being sold to Toshiba.
With the exception of the Wii, the both next-gen consoles are barely in the black.

That too yes but Why and what was their reasoning behind their decisions? Just doing it for fun or spite or "bought" or realistic decisions as I stated?
No, certainly not for fun, but directly as a result of Sony's back room dealings as a well established player in the movie industry.
