Telkom trialing 8 Mbps ADSL

All the speed in the world is useless if you only have 3GB or 4GB to go through. It's not like 4mbps isn't fast enough for simple browsing. (Heh, 384kbps is fast enough for that if you ask me.)

They'll have to do a lot of upgrading if they ever want to make 8mbps commercial, anyway. A great many supposedly 4mbps lines can't actually sync at that speed due to dodgy infrastructure.

Hopefully as they upgrade their top speeds they'll also abolish their lowest speeds and upgrade people to a more internationally-competitive minimum ADSL speed. (That they can actually provide in 100% of cases.)

Totally agree GK, totally.
But I think with Neotel in the picture, and the cables coming, things should get cheaper and better :)

yes. we don't want faster speed, but more bandwidth..

I hope you speaking for youself with reguards to faster speeds, we certianly do need the added speed... Website content is getting more and more complex the nice visual effects need to be able to stream to the end user's pc without the user becoming frustrated with long loading times.

For those that download they will appreciate get what they want faster.

However I will definitely agree with the bandwith statement, it needs to be addressed as well.

The company is also trialing ADSL2+, mainly aimed at supporting Telkom Media’s IPTV plans. ADSL2+ can support speeds of up to 24Mbps.

Now if the home users could get those speeds every one would be all happy go lucky.

lol no point in getting 8mbs when Telkom can't even give us a resonable ammount of monthly usage without thier exchange crashing once a month... Let alone 24Mb's

Screw Telkom, they only pushing 8mbs cause Vodacom/MTN have already got there.

Cool so now I can get off this useless 4mb line and onto a uber cool 8mb line so I can drill my massive 3 gig cap quicker, which I would normally never get through in a month with that slow 4mb line. woohoo, yippie, I don't give a sh....

Do we really need all these bells and whistles to function in business or house? I am sure that if one could design a website, that would be able to access the alleged huge amounts of data, in a much faster method, if one left off all the rubbish that gets loaded.

I am TELKOM "happy-clappy

STRANGE -- STRANGE.........:D

Dare I be the odd person out & the last man standing :D

I have to admit that I am pretty happy with TELKOM ( OK only in my own little World )

Seriousssss NO complaints so far. Service just keeps on working. The local TELKOM Direct shop is always very friendly and helpful. Got the ADSl installed in no time flat. Actually had it for awhile now. I think the "DO-BROADBAND" deal we have is not that bad.

I do not download huge ammounts or play games etc etc -- so have never noticed my CAP at all.

[Little whispered aside]

Mr TELKOM man -- look --I am putting my life on the line here -- posting this kind of stuff on "My-BROADBAND" -- you gotta come to the party man -- I NEED that 8Mb trial :D Some serious testing I goota do on that IPTV stuff -- you know how it goes...........

All you need to do is just send me a PM -- and we can take it from there :D

the EVER-HOPEFUL one

PS; Forgot to mention -- I have THREE twisted TELKOM pairs here -- ie. I can run THREE different services simultaneously....

Telkom is trialing an 8Mbps ADSL service, but said that it will take some time before the service is commercially made available.

That say's it all:rolleyes:

The company said that doubling the speed of its 4Mbps service is not a simple process as it must be accompanied by suitable backhaul upgrades to the network to support the higher access speeds.

So they are waiting for backhaul upgrades from Telkom. No waiting this is Telkom we are talking about - incompetent morons:sick:

The company plans to grow its ADSL subscriber base to 637 000 in the 2008/9 financial year and to 773 000 in the 2009/10 financial year.

So they planning on doubling their subscriber base from 1% to 2% - well done :sick:

WTF? Why do they need upgrades to support 8mbps? ADSL by default is 8mbps. And why are they again talking about IPTV? I thought that Telkom withdrew from all IPTV plans? Now they're talking about IPTV again WTF?

This sounds like Neotel's promise of cheap internet and phones. Thus far a little let down if you ask me. 8mbps is more than possible. Just not really with Telkom at the moment. Honestly, before they want to upgrade to 8Mbps, more bandwidth should be have a higher priority.

lol, thats because Telkom is not talking out of thier mouths, think a little lower... :D

When Telkom announces 30GB+ caps, then I can be a little excited.
As it is now, 8MB? waste of time at R60/GB

I think this is purely a PR exercise to "combat" NeoTel's product launch. The proof is in the EATING of the puding, not in publishing the recipe. Useless Telkom spin.

I say bring on 8Meg lines, as long as they up 384k users (like me) to 1MB speeds at least... :)

Here's hoping :D
