Apple unveils new iPhone

Ok great.. Lovely..

Now lets see, doing the conversion that means the top of the line iPhone costs R2400... whats a bet we won't see it in SA for anything less than R8k?

I think this will depend on the Vodafone deal with Apple - I dont think Vodacom will have much of a say in the matter...

Well hopefully.. time will of course tell with this one...

But if it is even VAGUELY reasonable in cost (as in no more than say 20% more than the US price).. then I am gonna be getting me one.

If the new iPhone was released and the prices set at $199 for the 8GB and $299 for the 16GB, then why on earth are people talking about the phone going for R8k - R10k in SA. That surely is Daylight Ripoff!! In SA i will understand if it went for R4k - R5k. Import and a little extra for the guy up top. But Anything above R6k would mean they are just getting cash for free. Then give me the phone for R3k and i will pay you R4k out of my own pocket just because you want it.. LOL What will this thing go for in SA now with the prices being $199 and $299???

New iphone will have in-store activation and require a contract to get it at that price.

Like all the other in-store activations we are currently required to do with absolutely EVERY new phone that is bought in this country?

Point is you will be forced into a contract - no way you'll be buying it for $199 without one.

The Americans don't have subsidised phones to the same level that we do. We will probably be cheaper than the US, not more expensive.

JohnB

And if i have a damn CONTRACT?!?! In store activation is fine. Like i have a choice anyways.. lol So if i dont have a contract expect to pay R10k and if i do have one i will pay less or do i still get ripped off the SA way??

Australia, Italy, New Zealand & Portugal on July 11

Vodafone, the world's leading international mobile communications group, and Apple(R) today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone 3G will be available in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Portugal on July 11, and in the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, South Africa and Turkey later this year. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

"We are very excited to bring iPhone 3G to many of our customers across Europe and emerging markets this summer," said Frank H. Rovekamp, global CMO, Vodafone Group. "Vodafone's extensive, high speed and reliable networks mean customers can enjoy a great Internet and communications experience on their iPhone 3G."

"We're excited to work with Vodafone, the world's largest mobile telecommunications company, to bring iPhone 3G to 10 countries across the globe," said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "We can't wait to get this revolutionary product in the hands of even more people around the world."

Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Portugal will be the first Vodafone markets to offer customers iPhone 3G for purchase on July 11. iPhone 3G will be available via Vodafone on both prepay and contract price plans which will include great value data bundles. Other markets will follow later this year and full details of specific launch dates and price plans will be made available soon by individual Vodafone operating companies.

Customers in Vodafone's 10 markets where iPhone 3G will be available can pre-register online and in retail stores in the next few days.

"During his keynote, Jobs stated that $199 would be the maximum price that networks would be allowed to charge across the globe, which would equate to a price in SA of around R1 500.

However, VAT and other duties might result in this being closer to the R2 000 mark when it hits the streets later this year. There are also two versions of the phone with more memory that will sell in the US for $299 and $399."

This sounds good, but i'm guessing vodacom are gonna make us sign a contract... that sucks :(
