Apple unveils new iPhone

So fair to say it will be available at full cost ($199/r1500) on prepaid and subsidised for varying degrees on contract?
huh? U wish. R1500 on contract and R4k prepaid. iPhone 1st edition was $300/R6000-00!!

just find it very un-apple like, that they should offer the iphone for over $199 on prepaid, when they said that 199 is max price.

apple is also not receiving subsidies on tis anymore.

and if we had to look at trends, the prev. iphone was also on contract at first, while after that it sold for the same price on prepaid

By un-Apple like you mean very-Vodacom like right? That's who is calling the shots wrt pricing in SA.

My point being that the iPhone sells for $300 abroad while it's not officially available in SA they are being sold for around R6k (http://www.jump.co.za/product/apple-iphone-8gb-7780730.htm). The iPhone 3G will sell for $200 abroad so based on that we lightly to see them being sold for around R4k locally...
Those iPhones were all back channel phones - people paying retail prices and then importing them on the side one by one.

This is different - Vodacom will be importing them by the thousands and not paying retail prices to do so.

Ya thats $199 on a contract. You cant buy them outright for $199 unfortunately :(

I just read that you'll be able to buy it on prepaid in europe for about 500 euros (Thats about R5000).

From my calculations, a regular cheapish contract (+- R150pm) you will usually get a "free" phone to the max value of R3000-R3500. So on a regular contract I think we're looking at an extra R2000-R2500 pay-in for the new IPhone. But stevie boy promised a max price of $199 worldwide, so it might only be available on the more expensive contracts :(
