Exclusive Early last month, webmasters here at The Reg noticed an unexpected spike in our site traffic. Suddenly, we had far more readers than ever before, and they were reading at a record clip. Visits actually doubled on certain landing pages, and more than a few ho-hum stories attracted an audience worthy of a Pulitzer Prize winner. Or so it seemed.

As it turns out, much of this traffic was driven by the new malware scanner from AVG Technologies.

Six months ago, AVG acquired Exploit Prevention Labs and its Linkscanner, a tool that automatically scans search engine results before you click on them. If you search Google, for instance, and ten results turn up, it visits all ten links to ensure they're malware free.

So those with small caps, or on uncapped 3G should be very, very careful....

So glad I've upgraded both our home PC's to openSuSE 10.3 (soon to be 11) :D

Not interested in having problems with high bandwidth usage, logfiles filling up the hard drive and viruses trying to get in everywhere

ClamAV for a weekly scanning schedule on any Linux box works just as well :D

I don't dig AVG8. The "LinkScanner" is freaking annoying too.

AVG is a load of cr@p to be honest.

I personally use Avira PE Classic on my XP machine, and I've had no problems whatsoever.

Linux doesn't need anti-virus @ The_Librarian. Unless you're paranoid :D

I use AVG 8 paid versions at work and home and love it.

It's easy to say something is 'a load of cr@p', but why? Can you tell me why?

kingrob ... my previous employer insisted on using AVG 7 Pro on their desktop and laptop machines. I was the in-house IT guy.

It is well documented that its a resource hog, and its rate of detection is not up to scratch compared to other AV's. The false positives drove me up the pole to say the least. I often had to sit for hours doing data backup and format/re-install Windows.

One e.g. I had a machine, scanned it with Nod32, and it found 132 viruses/trojans. I was given an hour to sort that mess out and get it back to a colleague at another branch. The machine had an AVG install ... hence my assertion that AVG is cr@p. Version 8 is merely a face-lift.

If you love it, thats your story kingrob. I hate the program, along with McAfee/Norton products. The bane of IT techicians/support professionals everywhere ...

A careful computer technician will have clamAV on his linux PC to make sure he doesn't transfer viruses/trojans over to his clients.

That's the only reason I'll use ClamAV on my Linux laptop. :)

+1

I tried Nod32 (downloaded trial version) and it crashed after a few minutes....um...and then I uninstalled it.

Uncapped = no worries + Link scanner = null and viod under Opera 9.5 :D

You want to rub our noses in uncapped heaven Glordit? Some of us have pocket limitations you know :(

Sheesh ...

lol
