No more ADSL resets

Session resets made absolutely no sense in the first place. It can barely be considered a step forward when you're still 100 steps back.

o they don't enforce it but yet still do it? i never believe what telkom says

I still dont see what the big deal with IP resets is?
Can someone please explain why it matters?
I mean it is not like it is feasible to run a web server or services off ADSL anyways.
Then there is always dynamic DNS.

According to DynDNS.org, my hostnames have been static from June 12th until now.

I'm going to get another notification from them that my hostnames will expire soon due to non-update...

(and I'm using dynamic IP's)...

Telkom Internet stopped resets from Nov 01 '07 as per the ICASA ruling. There are some challenges with no resets - mainly related to monthly caps. For example if a user has been online for 4 months and he has downloaded 6GB and uploaded 3Gb - the session information recevied from SAIX, only tells you how much data has been transferred and how long the entire session has lasted for - There is no information to tell you what was used in what month - making calculating usage tricky. Some ISPs still implement a reset to avoid this problem - but in theory they are not complying to the ICASA ruling.

just incase anyone is interested at all....

potential sollution? do away with the friggin caps.

this reset thing is a farce

And there was the response I expected.

When will you reaise that caps are not going to going away any time soon, simple as. As a matter of fact, it is being implemented more and more world wide and I do not see that trend changing.

Why is the reset thing a farce? You probably have no basis for that statement but probably just like sitting on the bandwagon.

THERE ARE NO MORE RESETS... come ashore..

Why should the problems of implementing legislation be handed over to the customer? This is typical South African way of doing business. Law enforcement of anykind is non existent in SA, especially where Gov is involved.

The rulings stated that we shall not be subject to resets, period. All ISPs, including Telkom is guilty of still implementing this. I don't really care why they are doing it, it is not allowed and degrades the qaulity of the product I pay a lot of money for every month. If ISPs are unable to comply with the regulations, they MUST either be fined and final notice given for complience, or get out of the game. The status quo is simply not acceptable.

What is the point of having laws and regulations if they can be simply side stepped by making a few excuses. Sigh....we are indeed in a heap of trouble in SA.

I've noticed now for quite some time that many of our sessions have lasted for longer than 24 hours, and that we've been getting the same IP address over and over.

Unfortunately, probably due to the rather crap router we have, I still have to reset the thing after heavy use, but anyway. This is still another small step in the right direction.

i agree with this part of your post sir :)
you make it sound as if HATING what telkom stands for is a bad thing :p

What was Telkom's original excuse for resetting again? Something like protecting its users from online attacks by changing their IP addresses.
What a joke.

It makes more sense now.

A word of caution is necessary here, you are bringing a somewhat misleading message across. The accounting was uncoupled from the session a while back - when interim accounting updates were enabled. I think you probably are aware of this but your post might lead to people thinking that they can score by keeping the session alive for > 30 days which is not the case. Sure there will be an error factor at some point but with an accounting update sent every 1 hour, the effect of this is limited.

What I think you are/were trying to say is that the SAIX tracker shows and updates usage after the session is complete (thus, not including interim updates). For ISPs, since they receive the interim updates, they *should* be showing you your usage in near real time (1 hour lag).

How does WA then give you pretty much instant information and know exactly when you have run out of BW. How does the rest of the world manage it then as well?

Telkom never invented the internet, They must stop trying to pretend they did with BS excuses

So basically, people want no resets so they can jippo the system.
