MTN and Cell C to do battle

mtn the cry baby

MTN wants more money for cellc interconnectin fees, vodacom and mtn are already ripping cellc of after increasing their connection fees when cellc joined the market, trying to bully them.

The question that has too be asked here though is how come the networks can interconnect CST's at such a low figure and still make such huge profits. CST interconnect fees are some where in the region of 50c a minute vs normal interconnects fee of R1.25 per minute. I stand corrected on the exact figures, but the differance between the 2 figures is extreme.

Is it not time to drop the interconnect fees radically ie sub 50c per minute level. We need cheaper communications in SA, and the interconnect fees are most probably the single biggest factor in our high cellular costs here.

Interconnection fees.</edit> Sounds like collusion or price fixing to me, but then, what do i know...

Although a large sum of money is at stake, I reckon MTN risk losing a lot more by letting this tit-for-tat continue.

One has question how CST interconnect of R0.50 can be a problem when the call per minute cost in many European countries is equal or less including the interconnect.

So what this tells us in no uncertain terms (what a lot of people already know) is that the R1.25 is completely inflated.

I cannot fathom that MTN would want to bring these facts to the fore in a public spat - surely that will only put pressure on regulator to be more decisive on the issue.

But perhaps the answer lies in the last paraphrase - MTN is in full control of the regulator, to an extent where they can take on this battle with no fear of decisiveness....

Sad....

Ok so if I have a car and you really really would like to use it. You are the one to tell me how much I must charge you for using my car

mtn do have a point about the location of these CST's.
I have seen many lf these in towns and places that can never be defined as under serviced - I mean an area with 3G coverage cannot exactly be defined as underserviced now, can it?

the problem is there mtn/vodacom/cellc only mobile networks and they are ripping us off every day with your car story at least there is like 10+ more cars i could possible use

I think you guys are missing the point. It's there for you to use, the price for it is clear. You have the choice to use it or not.... simple

MTN/CellC/Vodacom/Telkom and all these are Businesses not NPO's. It's all about health competition. If one drops their prices and the other just matches it, it's not competition is it. That is where the problem is.

There is some market changes where one provider tries to structure packages different to the others and thus making it more competitive.

Competition is the problem, pls guys get away from this NPO mindset. They are companies they have investors who needs returns on their investments.

If you put money in a bank you want interest on it yes ?

Think about it ;)

Even though I am a MTN subscriber, I hope Cell C wins. They are not in an excellent financial position and them winning would be good for competition.

We're getting ripped on inter-connection fees on mobiles as well as bank charges.
