MyISP launches free Internet

"We believe that since the demise of free Internet from service providers such as Absa Internet, the market has been waiting for a similar offer from an experienced provider like MyISP."

I guess that says it all. If a bank the size of ABSA couldn't afford to cross-subsidise free Internet, what hope does an "experienced" [sic] ISP like whatsisname have?

I suppose they haven't noticed that their entire business depends on a certain well-known incumbent telco, who will squash them if they feel even the slightest itch. The only effective "free" ISPs in the world are those that have a solid revenue stream with which to cross-subsidise (typically mobile SP fees), and/or solid regulatory mechanisms to protect them (LLU, wholesale price controls, regulated interconnect payments etc).

I'm not so sure that this isn't a viable business model, wholesale bandwidth costs sub R20 for that 300MB, most would probably want an email address and be prepared to pay 29 bucks for it, so they've introduced a 300MB account at R29, or about (you guessed it) 10c/MB which just happens to be the out-of-bundle rate.

Naturally this relies on people wanting the email account or using more data than they need and myisp having done research... so have they? probably... have they done it properly? that time will tell.

D

Yeah, sounds like a brilliant model as people will surely begin to use more than 300 megs a month as they get more fammilar with the web

and as they get more familiar they will want faster speeds than dial up (another hidden cost) which means an ADSL connection and line which costs R 435.00 (R108.95 monthly line rental fee and R326.00 ADSL monthly connection fee). This together with the R110.00 FOR A 1gb package = R545 which is already much higher than ISP's like Screamer who offer a 1Gb WiMAX package for R190.00 P/M which includes the line and connection so where's the business model?

This is designed as a cheap way to get subscriber numbers but can't be long term.

What are they going to do to stop people:
1. Creating more than one account (multiple 300MB)
2. Simply using this instead of top-up at their normal ISP.

Oh my God, our telco industry is turning into some sort of twisted spam infested nigerian scam site.

I've send them a mail regarding some questions. Will post here once I receive a reply....

But perhaps this is a step in the right direction? Only time will tell.

Very clever way of baiting new users. Its the e-mail and out of bundle data rate that will make them the money. More competition in the market is always good. Now we have to hurry up and wait for SEACOM.

Excellent strategy employed here. Good luck to them.

This obviously will shake up the market and give the bigger players incentive to over deliver! (Hopefully) <- * Take this with a pinch of salt *! :P

Good luck to your guys... Hope you succeed and steal a decent chunk of market share.

PS: Please keep your QOS decent though...
