Let's forget about all the Wii/Natal/Motion tech stuff for a minute as the thread is focused more on standard controller titles.
Here's my little debate. I'm been gaming since NES/DOS days and yeah, gaming has come a far way since then. The past couple of months I've been playing Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Fable 2, etc. Basically all the A grade titles on the market that interests me. The games were fun so I was satisfied ...or so I thought.
A few days ago I discovered a site where you can download Xbox games demos. Since I'm on 3G at home I never had the luxury of doing so on Xbox Live and since this site is HTTP based I could download some at work which is upcapped. Yeah, I played the Red Faction demo, the RE4 demo and some others but the shock came in when I started playing Castle Crashers, Sonic 3, Gunstar Heroes and some other HD titles such as Omega 5.
Now for those who aren't familiar with these titles they are in a nutshell ... 2D platforms. Basic simple platform brawling. The scary part is I'm only playing these demos. Actually to be honest, I'm enjoying the extremely short Castle Crashers demo more than the actual GTA 4 which is just lying here on my desk. I'm just having so MUCH more fun playing these titles. There's no steep learning curve, million button configurations or confusing navigation problems. I now remember what gaming was like a few years ago.
I'm probably in the minority here but I personally think titles got to complicated and technical over the years. I'll rather come home from work and just bash away and have fun than replaying a very, strategic, 40 minute, confusing mission over and over.
Well, maybe that's just me. I miss the old games but I don't want to retro. I want to play these type of games on current generation machines and that's why I'm glad about the new Epic game and the new turtles remake.
