Triple-play PoC over fibre from iBurst

I'm betting my left nut the pricing for the data packages will be insane compared to normal ADSL.

Also interested to know how you're going to cater to 279 houses with 1 DSTV hookup....

If I was choosing a housing estate, I would avoid one with any form on monopolised gated network. Give me the freedom of ADSL or I'm not interested.

SmartVillage monopoly

I wish I could get Telkom in my "community", I have to be subjected to SmartVillage's rediculous prices of over R100 per GB. The only other option is wireless, of which I only get Vodacom (HSUPA) and MTN (EDGE).

Surely it is my constitutional right to have access to other fixed line services and if not SmartVillage should offer competitive rates. I hate this monopoly.

Furthermore I have requested a statement from SmartVillage - all to know avail.

I'm happy for iBurst. I've tried to cancel my month-to-month deal with them for the last 3 days.

Sorry this is offtopic but i want to rant about iBurst. You call accounts department, get put in the queue for 10 minutes and they insist on trasferring you to the "Retentions department". There is no "Retentions Department" number on their website to call directly. Here your call will be dropped or you get put on hold for 10 minutes or longer. I put the phone down because waiting 20 minutes is now rediculous.

I tried changing packages using their website. I want to change from my 5GB package to the 40MB package. they want to charge me a R1650 migration fee. The reason I went for the month-to-month deal was that would be bound to contract. WTF! Why am I charged this rip-off fee.

I signed up with ADSL 2 weeks ago with Telkom. Service was superb. In 10 hours I had my ADSL signed up over the phone, self-installed and connected.

I didn't think I would ever say this: iBurst, learn from Telkom. For the exhorbatant fees you charge on your bandwidth, your service sucks!

I would like to know how (if) they actually make money out of this..

Seeing as a 2Mbps MetroLink is R7400 and they want to provide every resident with 4Mbps?

Check the T&C on their web site relating to month-to-month contracts.
There is a FIXED R 99 downward migration fee for mont-to-month customers irrespective of which package you are on.
Insist that the contract be honored. (I went though the same hassle...)

As for contacting "Customer retentions":
Here is a direct contact:

Honestly though you are far more likely to get speedy resolution via Shaun Green.

iBurst is a shambles in my personal opinion with the notable exception of Shaun Green who will generally go out of his way to assist you.

obviously it's not 4mb per person, they resell 40-50 times so they can make a lot if you think about it. Setting up in a new estate is hectic, i waited two years for my adsl line. This would be perfect...get iburst for the first year or so and then migrate to ADSL, they cannot stop you from getting a normal landline. I might be wrong but i cannot see how.

You're right, I remember it used to be R99. The fvkkers have changed the T&C . It now reads

"4.11 Package Migrations

4.11. 1 Month to Month Agreements
The Subscriber shall be entitled to Downward Package Migration subject to (1) one calendar month notice. A migration fee shall be charged by the Service Provider in respect of downward migration."

Article Correction

iBurst Business have asked myBroadband to correct this article.

The Proof of Concept (PoC) of the Triple Play services (voice, video and data) have been running for the last few months and today's launch was the formal acceptance into production of the system after extensive testing by the community.

All depends on what arrangement the Home Owners Association (HOA) signed with the telecoms provider ie Telkom, iBurst, WiSP

So before you buy you have to inquire what telecom (voice, data) facilities will be available to you.

Monaghan Farms seems quite a big property, so I am sure plenty of fiber needs to be laid

Thanks rpm,

The FTTH network was installed quite a while ago as were the kit that distributes DSTV, data and telephony services. The PoC itself ran for the last 5 months.

Each house has a 1Gb/s fibre connection. This can be upgraded to 10Gb/s if needed. So think of the whole estate as a big fibre LAN.

The fibre is used for all services, including a VoIP soft-switch, DSTV distribution (the SAT signal), VoD, etc. And clearly data.

The estate is quite far from any copper infrastructure, so we shot a microwave link into the estate. Each resident can spec their own data-rate and can currently go up to 155Mb/s.

Having been involved with Gated Communities for quite a while, this is quite exciting compared to the typical copper wired communities seen today.

FTTH is clearly the way of the future. :)

BTW, each house is wired with structured CAT-7 cabling.

This means you can plug any device into any of the RJ45 connectors on the walls.

If you want to move your TV, you just plug it into the closest point for example. Same applies for data and telephony.

After reading this article this morning, I found it a bit vague and understood some aspects wrongly. So I was left with a lot of questions starting with "why" tugging at the back of my mind. Why would they bottleneck the fibre network to 4mbps for residents with a wireless link to each house (my understanding of 'Last Mile' is to the home, not data centre)?

But after reading the correct description of the setup, I can only say WOW. That's the way it should be!! Those residents must be laughing!

I only wish I could be part of something like that, or at least get to see it in action! :D

sorry i never liked iburst nor had any good experiences with them, and for what they offer is not suited to my needs.
