This is quite simple really.
1. Install Spybot Anti-Beacon and that other script mentioned earlier in the thread to disable the spying stuff. This is a few clicks.
2. Right click on some live tiles and disable them. I only use a live tile for the weather app. Below that tile, I have sub-categories with small normal tiles with names like "System" (my computer, control panel etc), "Work" (office programs, project - related software, a work folder),
"Gaming" etc.
All easy to navigate, no ads, no live tiles I don't use, almost never have to use the All Apps part of the menu because I took around 10mins to make the improved start menu work for me.
Oh and nothing changed in my menus with the last update, I think people are exaggerating or missed some of the obvious things to change in the original install process (also maybe a 10-min time investment over doing a default install).
