10 settings in Windows 10 you should disable

Nope.

The way you and some other ppl want it to work.
Most people from all the comments. ;)

As usual you are trying to pick a fight about something you know NOTHING about! Not that is any of your business, but IF you have been following my posts about windows 10, you would know why I ended up coming from Windows XP direct to WIN 10. And I have not berated anybody, either, especially for upgrading to WIN 10. I leave that for you and your cohorts to do!!

In my case, I worked for an organisation that had a BYOD policy, who took a perfectly good new Win 7 PC and laptop, imaged them and then loaded windows XP. When I left, they claimed to have re-imaged the machines back to what I had before, but what happened is I ended up with an upgraded win 7 machine running WIN 10!

Hence why I came from Windows XP, straight to win 10

Do you understand now, or do you want me to provide a full log of how this was done?? You are really becoming a PIA.
Just commenting on what you say. Me and my cohorts? If anything I've only berated the OS. Very long winded explanation there. Still doesn't explain though why you skipped Vista, W7 and W8. Seems not all MS os'es are good. ;)

That's the whole idea of Windows. You can configure it the way you like and do anything with it. No other platform comes close.
No that would be Linux. Windows is more requiring configuration before it works the way it's supposed to.

Because I do not replace PCs just for the hell of it.

I had no need to try out Vista, W7 and W8 -----
But it seems you do have to try out everything that comes along ...

I actually use computers as tools to do productive work.

Reasons to upgrade.

It's faster if you don't run a potato.
Future support in the games department.
Backward compatible with previous software.
UI is better tbh.
More secure as far vulnerabilities go.
Future support in the software department.
Safe enough for a downs to use yet scalable for a power user.

Generally only tenagers or gamers claim Windows 10 is good. Gamers don't even realize that all new games are ported. Many of them have overclocked machines which do not keep up for 7 hours, so system stability is not really an issue to them.

Those who claim that Windows 10 is faster, compare it to the few years old Windows 7/8 installation. It is a fresh installaqion which make it faster, but Win10 is not faster to a fresh installation of win7. Some compare boooting times, it is misleading.

IT professionals do not like windows 10, because it takes to much time to configure machine and undo Microsoft's desires. And it is what this thread is about.

I'm sure devs love Windows 10.

This thread was about how to configure WIN 10, until it was derailed.

It would be great if we could back to listing what persons have found out about Win 10 and how to customise WIN 10 to suit users' needs. We all know how "useful" the MS Community is regarding support, with just about no real support coming from the MS persons present there.

There are many out there who are just ordinary people, who for one reason or another, have got a machine with WIN 10 on it and just want to customise the system until it suits them. For those persons, this thread had the potential of becoming a good reference.

Let those that use WIN 7/8/8.1 start another thread for similar useful tips.

We were all novice users at some time or another, so let the teenagers do what they do. Let the gamers do what they do in the portion of MyBB dedicated to gaming.

We are not all IT professionals, but some of us are pretty good regardless. IT professionals will have to take an interest sooner or later when their organisations migrate to win 10, but in the mean time let us ordinary okes provide support where we can without having to continually justify what we are doing and why.

You are right, but not to the extent that it should be a focus on technical support. Not in 'News' section. There are other sections like 'Software' or 'Gaming' to discuss specific configuration issues.

There is no such list of recomended options. In Windows 10 it is a disaster if you ask me. In Windows 7 I had to turn off one default option "Automatic Updates". In Windows 10 it turned really bad. If you want to really disable automatic downloads and updates in Pro version you have to play with group policy editor, as there is no such option in settings app. The available options use careful wording to cheat you instead to give clear choice. In Home version there is no such possibility. You will also discover that you have to do the same in every app included with Windows.

It is so bad that I have to disable almost every option enabled by default. Any "recommended by Microsoft" option has to be disabled, no question about. When you read very quick, you will be misleaded, by example automatic updates will always be downloaded - installed or not - is your option.

Lastly, we have chased away Microsoft moles from the news section, better keep that way. ;)

Seriously, people: why put up with this?

I have been Windows free for months now and have not looked back.

Because like Mt Everest, "it's there", and is being sold and is installed on millions of PCs laptops and devices.

And because it "works".

Windows 7 gets security updates till 2020.

Windows 8 is still in mainstream till 2018 and security updates till 2023

Windows 10 till 2020 and security updates till 2025

Is Win10 not supposed to be the last Windows? I thought that was the direction they were going, to have one platform that continuously upgrades?

It's a possibility that that will happen yes...

Unless your most equals a signification portion of 350 million of the unique installations then it stays some.
Did you miss the number of uninstallations from unwanted installs? A fallacy, absolute numbers without anything to compare it to says nothing.

Because I do not replace PCs just for the hell of it.

Who said anything about replacing pc's. We are talking operating systems here. So you saw no need to use any of those, just as we see no need to use W10.

So how many uninstallations from unwanted installs were there?

I highly doubt that. Sounds just like MS crap marketing talk. I guarantee you that we will not still be running Windows 10 in 10 years time.

Its not just marketing talk at all.

The potential is that you will get a Windows that is constantly upgraded, they have spent huge amounts of effort decoupling the bits and pieces of Windows for precisely that reason.

Fresh windows 8 was slightly faster than fresh window 7 on mechanical HDDs. Much faster when both have an SSD.
Win 10 is slightly faster even.

We shall see. Thread link saved for future reference. :p

Mint / KDE is pretty customisable...more so than windows I'd say. Sorry if that's off-topic, but your statement "no other platform comes close" isn't quite correct on this score.

I have a laptop which was slightly unstable with windows 8. It would sleep, then not always wake up without a blue screen.
I installed mint... and it was worse. Pretty much unusable. It would just crash while using it. Mint also felt like an alpha version of Mac OS X. No thanks.
Every two years or so I try a flavour of Linux to see if it's ready for daily use. Every time I realize just how good windows really is.

Notice the word potential :)

Microsoft may changes their minds of course..... or they may follow a model somewhat like OSX for a while at least.

The only part that does seem to be predominantly set in stone is more frequent updates to the OS itself.
