1000D vs. D3000 for newbie

450D being discontinued, so should be specials around. Game has a 2 lens special. AFAIK new prices will be out end-March including the new 550D, and probable price drops for the 450D and 500D.
Could one of you guys please tell me what AEB means?

One use of AEB is to create high dynamic range images. IOW photos that have a greater dynamic range than the sensor can capture on a single image without blowing highlights etc.
Have a look at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ for some HDR.
I also echo the sentiment - dont waste your money on either the 1000D or the D3000 - the 450D is far better than either and should be going cheap soon enough.

Whichever brand you buy, there should be a coupon in the box for joining our Tuesday evening sharing sessions for a bit of, "Hi my name is <your name> , and I suffer from Lens Lust."
I'm fairly certain you have gotten a LOT of valuable info from all the guys here on the merrits of each brand. I'm still shooting on a 2005 Canon 20d which doesn't have live view, is only a 8,2MP and isn't that great when it comes to really low light. Recently however I got my hands on a 24-70 f/2,8 L lens and oh my word did the old Canon go back to being a teenager again. Beautiful crsip, clear shots with amazing colours. Don't get me wrong I still want to upgrade to a 7d but my old 20d is absolutely great with some good glass popped on the front. Now I don't know which to get first, a 7d or a 70-200 f/2,8?
Whichever camera you get you won't be dissapointed. I would say that AEB is a must and I can't believe that some cameras are being sold without it. Weird. I would, in your shoes, probably sell everything that wasn't bolted down (mom included) to get the new 550d when it hits the shelves. Adding video is a plus but that new sensor is really really good. I've now seen some sample pics and it is going to be a great seller for Canon.

Agreed, or simply start shopping around for prices on the previous 450D, in case some shops have stock they'd like to flog. You could find a real bargain

Well if you can't wait and the 5,500 is burning a hole in your pocket, I'd vote for the D3000. Then start saving for the extras and your next lens!

Makro still has the D3000 + kit listed for R4999.
The question I have, that they are unable to answer, is does the kit (as advertised) include the VR lens?
Also, does it have the training coupon?

From what I have seen in durban, no one offered the D3000 +18-55mm VR lens for R4999, the cheapest I saw with the VR was R5599.

Keep looking though, prices fall on a regular basis and someone might be running a special with the VR lens.

Probably 55-200 with the D3000 @ ±2500. Which is why the D3000 twin lens combo is a good deal because you pay a lot less for the lens.
A good way to start is also going for second-hand lenses.
